looking for a documentary film subject

Hi All,

I'm an independent documentary filmmaker, living in Geneva for 3 years now. It's been 2 years since I've last made a film and I'm anxious to find a topic, or rather something happening here in Switzerland, that inspires me. That being said, I am not very well connected to things/people/places where cool stuff is happening. I was thinking that the glocals community might be a good "ear to the ground", so to speak.

If you have any issues or events or people that you think would be worth documenting in a short film and can be filmed here in Switzerland, would you please send me an email or reply to this forum? I would be most interested in helping to tell a story that is inspirational, for the greater good or just outright quirky or unusual.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Leigh

Why dont you make a documentary about all the expats that are here, and have their own business's.  Most of them are working very hard within the swiss community and are not all that appreciated . So you could show the benefits of foreigners in Switzerland ;)

That's a nice idea. I remember there was a photographer her about 2-3 years ago who tried to get a photo of expats from each country in the world. You could do something similar; a study of the diversity of Geneva expats.

Other ideas from the top of my head:

Caves Ouvertes, the annual wine tasting festival around Geneva. People love it but winemakers have mixed views because it attracts not only wine enthusiasts but also people who who think it's like the german Oktoberfests (i.e. drink as much wine as you can in a day).

Recent Swiss referendum in favor of limiting executive pay. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21647937. It could be nice to capture opinions of different groups (locals vs expat, employees vs managers).

Yesterday I heard of a terrible case in the village where I live - a teenage girl of 17 years commited a suicide. She had a family which seemed good from the outside, she had siblings and her parents were not separated. So I asked if it was a single case and it appeared that there were others.

I got interested in this subject - Suicides of adolescents in Switzerland - and was astonished that the issue is very relevant and sSuicide is the 2nd cause of death among the teenagers here. Nevertheless, the topic is somewhat a tabou because the families of the deceased teenagers feel ashamed and prefer not to report the real reason of death, which also affects the statistics.

I find this issue interesting enough to be investigated as it might help to prevent other lethal cases.

A lot of info and statistics can be found on the internet, for instance:

Dear Leigh,

From working with an NGO in Geneva, Initiatives of Change, http://www.caux.iofc.org

I have come across an incontestable figure in International politics and diplomacy, peace-keeping and sustainable future, Mohamed Sahnoun.

I'm not sure what subject you would like to work on, but in my opinion there is an opportunity for doing something great, lots of material to work on. If you are interested you can visit our website for details and don't hesitate to call our office.

Best,

James
