paid the bill and keep getting notifications to pay it
I am sort of running out of patience with this situation

in summer I visited a doctor, who was by the way the worst I've ever been to, and a month later I received the bill. I paid it immediately and was glad not to see this guy ever again! but ... two months later I received a notification that I should pay this bill. I called the secretary and emailed her the receipt of my payment and everything had been sorted out or that's what I thought until I received a second notification two months later. That time I went there in person and I thought for a second time that everything was all settled.... until today, when the third notification arrived!

Is there any other way to deal with the issue, apart from going back to them and explain etc? Some sort of higher authority to whom I can show the receipt and make those guys stop bugging me?

I am afraid that in the end they will sue me!

Just ignore it. You have the proof that you paid, joke's on them.

The issue is that if their screwed up system thinks you didn't pay, they might escalate the process further into a poursuit. You'll refuse the poursuite saying you already paid, and then they will need to decide if to take it to court or not. By that stage I'm sure they'll realise you already paid and they'll stop the process, BUT while you're in poursuit, even if you refused it, you can't get an attestation saying you're poursuit free.

It's no big deal unless you apply for an apt on the same time.

Sounds like you did more than enough tho...maybe send them a formal letter in registered mail saying you paid and that they should stop bothering you. Maybe then they'll bother to update their system...
