as most people know, i regularly organise events, so i'll use my case as an example, although i know from having talked to other organisers that it happens A LOT.
my activity post has all the details in it. which doesn't stop people from asking questions that are answered in said post.
the most regular is: 'where does the event take place?' (see the part that says you'll be notified about location on Monday). next is: 'what time does it start?' (see the part that says 7.30pm).
then i get a mix of the following:
- 'please let me know if it's in Geneva or i won't be able to make it' (notice that this post comes up under 'Geneva events' so obviously takes place there);
- 'uh...i signed up but haven't heard from you yet' (again, see the part that says you'll be notified on Monday)
- 'i didn't get a notification that i'd received a mail from you at my regular email account so i didn't get your email with the location details on time so i didn't make it' (see part 3 of my post that points out that that email notifications are unreliable and that one should make sure they can check their glocals account on Monday evening/Tuesday - and no, this will not stop me from blacklisting you).
i know my activity post is long, but this is in order to answer all these questions BEFORE people ask them so i don't have to answer them individually. so, if people only took the one minute it takes to read THE WHOLE POST, they wouldn't have to waste their time and mine (then again, i never answer any of these questions, cos if you can't read the post, mate, well that's really your problem!) and things would be so much simpler.
if any of the people who've asked any (or all) of the above questions are reading this post, i don't mean to be rude, i just want to make a general point and maybe make people aware that time and effort has gone in to the organisation of an activity and if a few more people read all the information before they sign up to something, well, that can only be an improvement ;)

i know, it IS very frustrating. i get some people asking me 'where is it? gva or lausanne?' when i have the address saying it's in Gva.. and then the person doesn't even read her email to check back.
i guess not everyone's on glocals as much as some of us :doze: but rather use it haphazardly.
for those events that you have limited seats or need specific numbers, maybe siteadmin can provide forms for people to instantly fill out when the hit the 'reply' button, and making it mandatory for them to complete all required details before they can be considered registered for the event. and the form should automatically populate with the basic details of the event (time/date/location) so that the person basically agrees he/she's read and understands they're coming to the event.
just some thought....

I think the problem comes from 2 areas:
1. Most people just skim the posts for key points, and not really read them in detail.
2. Some of our posts are very long, which makes it even harder to 'take it all in'.
The potential solution:
1. Us organisers have to accept there will ALWAYS be folks who ask these annoying questions, althogh the info is in the post.
2. Us organisers can try to wrote more focused posts, meaning:
- The posts are short
- The posts break the different points into bullet points / paragraphs, with clear headings for each new section.
- The posts highlight key info, to ensure if stands out from the rest.
Having said all that, so where is the Tuesday Drinks happening, and is it in GVA?

well, the reason the post is not short anymore is i started including more info in it b/c i was tired of replying to each individual question. and i have numbered bullet points and use capital letters for what i think is important (only some words, though - we've been warned against using all caps!), and i can't see that adding a heading (coloured or otherwise) would help: if they can't read that far anyway...
anyway, i was just ranting, i know there aren't really any solutions to this...

I usually write the KEY points in BLOCK LETTERS.
For example, if you want to join, PLEASE REPLY WITH YOUR FIRST & LAST NAME.
And sometimes I get a reply, "YES! I want to join"
What I do then is simply DELETE the email and NOT respond at all!
I think US organizers also have a regular job and a "personal life" ;) hehehe
Cheers

What really gets me:
"Oh yes, I am coming!" "I will be there"
And then they don't, and are not there. No opology afterwards, no little note befohand to let you know change of plans, nothing. Grrr.

You've moved on to talk about 'no shows'. It's a painful issue that been brought up before.
We're now working on an improved glocals.com platform, that will offer a better solution for preventing no-shows, this way:
- Before the activity: automatic reminders will be sent to participants
- After the activity: organisers will be able to easily flag those who pulled no-shows, and the system will track this. When someone pulls 2 no-shows, he/she will get a warning. 3 no-shows, and he/she will be suspended. 4 no-shows, and he has to go out with Tinkie.
Any feedback welcome...
Nir

and then there was another person who requested a spot and then never confirmed, and just found out i didn't get their tel# so i can chase them down, so i've now removed them off my list. i really don't enjoy these resevered seating events. Nir, I don't know how you deal with the 80 folks for your musical chair dinner events! (@_@)

Sometimes I feel like answering to the guys "hey can't you read??" but I think this would be too abrupt ;) and thus not helping them feeling comfortable in joining the activity - especially if they are new members!
BB08 used to write "I will not reply to questions for which answers are already in the post". I think it's pretty clear, and I am thinking of doing the same for my laser games & other.
What I hate the most is when people ask you looooooads of questions, and then.... don't show up! But as you said Nir, that's another problem...

Nir, in the new version of the site, if one registers and gets a pop-up "you are about to sign up for an activity, etc.", would it be possible to add something i.e. "have you read the whole post and noted down the various info?" Not that I want to take people for dummies, but sometimes I really wonder..... ;)

Thanks fro the idea. In the new version a pop-up will indeed come up when someone presses 'join', and it will say that the person should join only if he/she really plans to show up, and that if he/she pulls a no-show they'll be penalised.
Makes sense?

I really think the new website should encourage people to attend an activity if they never before; which is a big step for many, rather than scaring people. While I understand that in some activities, no shows can be a big issue...
Maybe the best way would be to make it optional for the organizer to ask for a FIRM commitment or leave it relaxed.
What think?

I like that idea a lot (and I think Youmeco brought it up before in a brain-stormong sessions).
We probably won't have this option for the organiser to select if he/she wants a Firm Commitment in the 1st version of the new site, but it will be high on the list for improvements.
New site is planned for April launch...

As places are limited, cases of people who sign up and don’t show up without informing will be defered to the subcomittee for the repression of no-shows, which is empowered to pronounce death penalties under the law 4243/08 for the protection of Glocals
