smoking - legal question

I see very often many people  gathering just in front of the entrance to a residential building, blocking the passage (as there is a short tunnel to access the door) and smoking. They come from restaurant and barber that have an entrance to their establishments to the left and right from the building's entrance (also within the building's tunnel).

What are the rules regarding smoking area in Switzerland? What are its limitations in terms of residental area and local business?

Hi Kris,

Geneva is not California, there are no rules regarding smoking outside, and no rules regarding distance from buildings as far as I can tell....

Wait till the summer, you can smoke at any outside restaurant or bar table... and many do.

Good luck making a fuss about it, youll simply be laughed at or shrugged at... if youre lucky it'll just be cigarette smoke you smell...

The Geneva Grand Council amended the law on the ban on smoking in public places on Friday. Smoking will now be prohibited at bus stops, near schools and in sports centers.

This legislative amendment aims to protect the population, especially youth, from exposure to smoking, said majority rapporteur Sandro Pistis, CWM MP. It was accepted on Friday by 63 yes, 4 no and 9 abstentions.

The extension of the smoking ban concerns places accessible to the public, outdoors or open in training institutions, schools and daycare centers, as well as playgrounds and paddling pools, sports fields and their stands, ice rinks and swimming pools. It also affects the grounds of day and summer camps as well as public transport stops.
