thievery and a gratuitous whinge

Yesterday my beloved sunglasses were stolen from the change rooms at Manor. This is the 4th time that I have had something stolen since I moved here less than a year ago, so I am feeling pretty bummed. If the thief is reading this, I hope the arms of the glasses pierce your eyeballs and cause you to die slowly. Unless of course you decide to hand them in to the customer service desk.

I will feel better soon...

Good link to know. Thanks for that.  I would try the Lost and Found Service (and thanks for future...uhhh...losses I will), but they were actually taken from my changing room, and I realised that I didn't have them about 10 minutes later.

Thanks for the laugh! (Always was a fan of Vincent Price).

At the risk of drwing some fire from you .. but hoping that you take control of your 'events' ... I have a cute friend (Marina also knows him) who regularly loses stuff to thieves all over the world.

He almost never acknowledges his own part in the events. And for as long he doesn't, he will go on losing things because well, hey it is not his carelessness/risk/trust/laziness/etc that help the opportunist thief right?!

But those who acknowledge their own part in any problems that come their way not ly reduce those problems but also feel better because they don't feel so hard done by "bad luck".

Food for thought, I truely hope.

@Kparker, everyone knows that.

But my point is: what are "we" going to do about it!

ALWAYS play victims of bad luck for being targeted?

or

See if we can do something to reduce our chances of being targeted by the opportunist or even the determined thieves?

The difference in approach can be as subtle as as pushing your laptop under your car seat or leaving it exposed on the backseat when you leave your car for just a few minutes.

In the case of the changing rooms for bearded09 ... yes it is an absolute pain to pack up everything, each time you want to leave the changing room and go get a different size of something from the store. But which does she prefer, 2 minutes extra/boring effort of taking everything with her or the awful feeling of being a victim yet again?

I would say she'd feel much better and much more empowered if 2 years from now she reads such stories ... and look back and see that her very own little precautions have meant that she has not suffered any such theft for 2 years!

I too have suffered and will do in the future. We know that. What can I do to make it less often?! And that is the question I am raising to hopefully help anyone reading this.

So true. A laptop left on the seat on the car in an underground garage is a theft waiting to happen

my own 'very little precautions'???? mate, it's not like I leave my wallet open on the restaurant table and go for a three hour drive and then come back surprised that it is not still there. I acknowledge my contribution and do not ALWAYS play a victim of bad luck for being targeted.

I'm more pissed at myself than anything, for not expecting to be robbed wherever I go. I had my wallet stolen from my office a few months back, whilst I went to pick up papers from the photocopier (for 1 minute). It was a colleague, and yes, I will definitely look back on that in a more empowered way, and realise that my new precaution of treating all my colleagues as potential thieves will mean I do not suffer anymore thefts.

Anyway, I did say it was a gratuitous whinge....

No, i totally acknowledge my part. I was angry, but mostly with myself. I don't assume that everyone will do what I honestly would have done had I "found" something of value in a change room, and that is to hand it in to the customer service. Honestly, I have done so. But they didn't "find" they "took", and I was dumb to walk the 8 metres which let them do it. I dropped me guard, matey

@bearded09 - "little precautions" was in response to kparker's comment ... I have no knowledge of the specifics of your circumstances and didn't don't judge your actions. To be clear: I was simply stating that being a little more careful helps "everyone" & "anyone" ... I was not criticising you by any means.

Sorry....that was what I call a "key-jerk" reaction...

Being more careful, does help us all, but it's true that stealing is stealing. Makes me think of the houses I see with bars, grills and security shutters and at what point we become prisoners of our cumulative little precautions, because it is accepted that to be preyed upon is normal. In this society.

Marina - as you say all my friends are cute ... so I guess you just did lend credibility at least to my statement if not my friend's existence. And if I tell you who it is then I think you'll agree.

But anyway this talk is getting too deep with a touch of over analysis. So I shall bow out here.

But before I go ... bearded09 ... with pleasure I will introduce you. He is very cute and very likeable. But I have to warn you ... he is hard to forget once you get to like him! Wink
