All,
More about stupid cars -- sorry! I'm sure this has been answered before; it must have been but I only found this thread about the examination. That's good: 8/10, but doesn't quite answer my question.
OK, I have to take my stupid car to the stupid test before the end of this month. But what do I actually have to do. It has to pass this test, right? So presumably I have to get my car into a state where it will pass before I take it to SAN. Is that right? How am I supposed to know if there's anything wrong with it? Cars are complete black boxes to me. My assessment is: it starts, the brakes seem to work, it doesn't make any strange noises or smells. QED it's fine and will pass it's test.
Of course I'm not the guy with a million little boxes to tick on the form.
This is not like the British MoT, right, where you just go along to some guy you know and say 'make my car pass its test and fix what you need to and give me a certificate'. There are two independent phases: the fixing and the testing. Is that it?
So: can I just take my car to a garage and say 'do the thing that you do to make this car pass its inspection'? How does it work? Can you make it pass?

Hayes,
As for the "expertise", you'll find all details here, but it's in French (or German or Italian). For the rest, it's only a matter of budget... The cheapest way is to ask the garage to check it, fix what needs to be fixed (NO free rein!!!) and then go pass the test yourself. If cars are totally alien to you, I suggest that you first ask the TCS for a Test pré-expertise TCS. They're good advice. Drop me a line if you need help with the language.

:)
Thanks Isa413 and Free! I'll follow all this up pretty soon (as I suppose I am obliged to do). 'Expertise', gotcha. And maybe the Test pré-expertise. Right. Thanks. More reading required, I think.
