A few questions for Geneva mountain bikers

Hi, I've just moved to Geneva and have a few questions for the mountain bikers out there, particularly the more downhill-orientated rather than cross-country ones

Firstly, is there a good bike shop in Geneva which does service/parts for bigger bouncier bikes?

Secondly, I've heard there are some good DH trails on the Saleve. Is that the best place nearby without going into France or are there any other options I should know about? If I get the cablecar up the Saleve is it obvious where the trails are or will I need someone to show me? And what are the trails like up there at the moment, are they in ok condition this time of year?

I don't know anyone in Geneva who bikes yet so if anybody fancies a ride let me know!

Thanks guys! Steve

Steven,

You can try HOT POINT in the Paquis neighborhood. They have some DH / long travel bikes in their store, and a repair shop that looks decent.

When you take the cablecar up the Saleve, you'd need to ride up a bit higher (the cablecar does not stop all the way at the top). You can either ride up the road, which is longer, or take the trail, which is steeper (you'll need to push your DH bike).

Once at the top, the trails start on the backside of the mountain. About halfway down it'll curve back toward Geneva. It's a very rocky trail, but I've done it on my CC bikes many times years ago.

Steven,

You could try the trails on the other side of Geneva above Crozet (in France). In season you can use the ski lifts to go up.

There are a few nice trails from St-Cergue. A little further than the Saleve but staying in Switzerland (Saleve is in France by the way, not that it matters!) and accessible by public transport. Take the mainline train to Nyon and then change to the mountain railway to St Cergue. You can then ride from there back down to Nyon or to one of the stations just above Nyon, going back up on the train as many times as you want. You can probably find the trails with a bit of exploring. The easiest one (both to find and to ride) starts just next to the level crossing that you pass just before arriving at St Cergue station. In principle the train runs every day and all year, but I know they were doing some repairs recently, so you might want to check their website.

After 6 months of looking and asking, finally found Saleve trail maps with mtn bike trails designated, at the Maison du Saleve.  Two different maps, one larger with all types of trails, and one specifically for VTT (mtn biking).  Big help for me for learning the trails on Saleve.  I'm sure there's more DH trails than what these maps show (I know a couple trails on the maps that I've seen DH riders on that are not designated specific VTT trails).

Check out the newly-opened bike shop "Viscacha Bike".

It's in downtown Geneva. www.viscachabike.ch
