Access to shelters in Geneva

At the risk of sounding slightly hysterical, does anyone have information about public radiation shelters in Geneva? It seems the apartment buildings have often converted the shelters into caves etc.

I heard there is a shelter under the Stade de Genève, but I could not find any official information.

Are such facilities open to non-Swiss?

I know we should always have some kind of identity document in our possession wherever we go in CH but the thought of an official checking one’s nationality at the door of a a nuclear fall-out shelter to sift the sheep from the goats is truly surreal.

“Yes, Madame, I do believe you when you say you’ve passed all the exams and interviews, if your Swiss passport hasn’t arrived yet, you can’t come in here!”

The best places to ask questions like this might be your concierge and your local Mairie.

Thank you TogJay. I have asked my Regie by email and there has been no reply so far. Asking at the Mairie is a good idea, thank you.

Out of curiousity I asked at our mairie where the public one was and the woman there had no idea so had to ask her colleague. Her colleague told her it was under the building she was standing in now and had worked in for 5 years! Sealed

I found out the best thing to do is to install the Alert Swiss app on your phone and have a bag packed with essentials.

It turns out Geneva does not have enough space for all.

"According to a document from 2017 provided to RTS by the federal government, the number of shelter spaces – public and private – had reached 110% of the population. However, 7 cantons had a shortage of spaces, with the cantons of Geneva (72%), Neuchâtel (76%), Basel-City (81%) and Fribourg (90%) at the bottom. Vaud (97%), Ticino (97%) and Thurgau (98%) were just below 100% coverage. At the other end were Obwalden (132%), Glarus (142%) and Graubunden (146%), with a surplus of space. Although, even in Graubunden some municipalities had insufficient space while others, often those catering to tourists, had a surplus of spaces."
