Advice for medical reimbursement

Hi All,

I would like to ask you for some advise what should I do in my situation.

1;I went to the gynecologist for a simple examination.

He did some tests, and one of them showed something bad. I got the information on the phone.

2; After, just to be sure and because I was worried, I went to ask the doctor personally about the result and what is the next step in my case.

3; I went for the third time and he did a biopsy.

The result was negative this time, and he said that it seems like I`d got false-positive test for the first time, so I am healthy.

I was relieved of course, but now I am holding the bills in my hands and I don`t really know that I should pay them (around 1500 CHF). I have never seen any paper of my medical files and theese results. Only the bills...

Can I complain for this somewhere, or I have to just accept it and pay, and live from my savings for a couple of months because of that?

Thanks

The invoice you received includes a detailed list of the tests done. You just need to send that to your medical insurance.  You don't need to send them a summary of the results, just a summary of what the doctor did, which is detailed in the invoice.

What i would like to know:

why i have to pay for the medical care after the false-positiv result???

It is not enough that they made me scared I have to pay lot of money because of their fault.

For this money they should have done the test 2 or 3 times...

Where should I go for exact information?

Thank you!

If the “false-positive” result had been life-threatening the doctor would surely have urged you to return for further consultations, but it seems the consultations were initiated by you, in which case they have to be paid for.

Nevertheless, why not go back to his surgery and ask his receptionist for a full explanation of the billing?

Alternatively, you could ask your insurance company for their guidance.

You can also get legal advice at the “Permanence juridique” in rue Verdaine.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Judith,

The answer to your question would be, yes you have to pay for the tests, even if you got a "false-positive" result. I don't know exactely your case, but it do not necessary means that the test was done in a wrong manner. As Nir said, the invoice includes a detailed invoice for the insurance (different than the results) and it should be sent to your health insurance that depending on your coverage will refund you at least 80% of the amount.

Hope this help!

Regards,

Viviane

As Viviane mentioned above, a false-positive does not necessarily indicate any bad practice, it is probably a limitation of the initial, probably relatively cheap test. Which is why it has to be confirmd/refuted by a more thourough (and more exepnsive) test.

E.g. the standard HIV test, recommended by many doctors, will give false positives in 1.5% of the cases. (According to wikipedia)
