Advice/help needed importing a 1977 VW camper

Hello

I own a 1977 late bay westy uk reg vw camper and hope to import it to Geneva in August this year.

I've done a little bit of research an believe the serviceability test may be an issue.

Has anyone else on here been through similar or can offer an advice.

I have also been searching for local VW clubs but can't seem to find any.

Thanks

It’s the public holiday of Ascension today so it’s a holiday weekend for many of us, which may explain the lack of response so far.

Meantime, you could also click on the “Groups” button to find members with similar interests and experience of importing a vehicle into CH.

All the best, R.

Hey, I have the same Westy, but from 79 (and a 9 seater from 1977).

I'm sorry I can't help you much with your question, my vehicles were not imported Frown

If you speak french, have a look at this forum: http://vw-bus.forum-actif.net/

There is a guy from Geneva who's trying to import his T3 from Spain, a guy who imported a few buses from America (but to France, I think) and a girl who bought a T2 imported from the US (but it's the seller who's doing all the paper work).

Maybe you can get some help some help from Garage Populaire, one of the swiss references for flat4: http://www.garagepopulaire.ch/sommaire.htm

I hope you'll manage to import it before the Chateau d'Oex international VW aircooled meeting (if you are into that kind of things).

Don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information, or just want to have a drink.

Thanks for the reply. At least all hope is not lost for one day seeing my van with swiss number plates on.

THanks for telling me about the Chateau d'Oex international VW aircooled meeting I'll try and check that out I hope to have the van over by that time even if it is still on UK plates.

Yeah I'm worried about the exhaust pollution test but if there are other similar vans running in switzerland maybe it won't be a problem. What type of car was your grandchilds.

I'm not sure about the meaning of "serviceability test". But if it is the "contrôle périodique", it shouldn't that much of an issue, as long as your van is not rusty, everything works properly and the engine is original.

I always give my vans to a specialist to prepare them for the test. Everything went OK so far.

There is one guy who only does VW aircooled, in Petit Lancy. I can give you his address. He's a great guy, but he's always overbooked and it's not always easy to get in touch with him.

It is worth noting that cars firstly registered before 1976 do not neet to pass the exhaust pollution test.  Probably many of the old VW buses in Geneva fall in this category.

And I (well, my vans) never failed the test anti-pollution.

It's compulsory for all vehicles registered after 01.01.1976.

Your van seems to be a US model. If it has a catalytic converter, you'll need to do the test every second year.

Mine don't have it, I need to pas the test every year.
