Air conditioner/Cooler
I need to buy one, any suggestions? Make/Model? Is it better to purchase in France or Geneva?

Thanks R

Re: Air conditioner/Cooler

Hi Rozlod,

Since the majority of people in GVA get by without air-conditioning, the question is not as simple as it seems.

On the technical side of things, the best systems are ones that have the air circulation unit inside the apt. and the heat exchanger unit outside the window/on the balcony. They are connected via a thick cable that transfers the cooling fluid. You need a window or door that you can leave open a little to pass the cable (you can tape the gap in the door). These units are normally in the 12-15'000 BTU range of power (enough for a 100 m2 apt). They do not need to have the water (taken from the air) emptied like smaller units that are "all in one" but with a small exhaust hose that goes out the window/door. These small ones have a bucket that when full will stop. Are you there all day to empty it when it is full? The small ones also have a larger tube that needs to be vented outside.

I will post a link below with an example of what the split system and small system looks like.

Are you in a situation (apt. or house) where you can have the condenser unit outside and let it run day and night (you can hear the fan) without the neighbors complaining about the noise? The condenser unit will also give off water that will go someplace. On the neighbor's balcony? You might want to clear these things with your Regis first if there might be a problem before spending any money.

If you can install a system, Fust has one that I will use as an example. The link is here. For something like this, I suggest that you buy it in CH and Fust will deliver it for free.

The normal price is CHF 1'500 but it is on special for CHF 999.

I know that Jumbo has a similar unit but I could not find it on their website. I think that it would be a bit cheaper than Fust. Not sure about delivery though.

Here is a link to what a smaller unit looks like so you can see the difference.

Hope that this helps.
