Asbestos - Random Question

I've recently moved into a brand-new apartment that is an additional floor to an already existing building.  The regie told me recently, conversationally in an offhand way, that there had been some asbestos clean up involved with the construction.  This in and of itself didn't concern me, since many times, and in many cities, older buildings have this problem and there are standard regulations for clean-up.  However, the more I go down to my basement, my cave, and the laundry, I'm increadingly concerned that there is asbestos down there.  The walls are suspiciously whitish/grey and could have been sprayed and/or be made of asbestos mixed cemement.  Also, the items in my cave are coated with a thin layer of what could be described as white paint "dust" after only a months.  As a professional in a similar industry as construction, I am aware of the potential types of installation and again, its visually suspicious.

Now my question is this: what can I do?  If I ask the Regie we all know they will say it's all fine - as with everything else.  Is there a building registry that anyone knows of that I could ask?  Does anyone know if I did ask the Regie, are they required to give me a certificate of good standing with regards to asbestos (for example, they are required in the US)?  I would know where to go if I were back home, but unfortunately with minimal French I'm limited in my searches.  Also I'm completely aware that I could be making something out of nothing, but with the knowledge that its in the older walls for sure, I feel I need to confirm one way or the other.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: Asbestos - Random Question

Firstly I'm not an expert nor in the building trade. Asbestos in French is 'amiante'. It's generally accepted that it was widely used here in buildings in the post-war years. As I understand it, if it isn't disturbed it isn't usually too much of a problem.

Clearly you're worried about this and I sympathise, it can be very unsettling when you 've doubts about your home.

General information site:

May be worth getting a sample analysed so you know where you stand:

This forum also has some general info.

You can use Google to translate the pages.

Also in general you could ask asloca for their opinion: http://www.asloca.ch/

Hope this helps, Nick
