My bank and credits cards were stolen today by a gang of pick pockets and though I cancelled them within 30 minutes of the incident-as I was on a train when it happened - my account was cleaned out. The bank are saying I can only claim on my household insurance-is this true or does anyone know if i have any other options?

Credit Cards will stop any unauthorised transaction from when you reported it, plus any suspicious transactions before then.... although mostly the cards will be cloned and used elsewhere most likely..
Bank cards and cards that access your accounts come with a PIN.... if your PIN was used to access your account (in switzerland most likely) then the bank will assume that you had a PIN reminder close to where the cards were, and as such wont help you due to lack of security on your part.
There are many ways to get a pin actually... the easiest is to look over someones shouder when they withdraw cash from a machine... and then steal the cards just after that... if this is the case and you were at the bank, it will have been recorded... so tell the police and they may have video of the thieves.
if you kept a PIN reminder with the card, then sorry but its likely even insurance wont pay....
House insurance will also have a limit on repayment probably... but check...
good luck.

Thanks for this-I suspect that they looked over my shoulder even though I wasn't aware anyone was there!

You might have a case if your account was cleaned out after you reported the theft...as the account should have been blocked immediately. At that point I think the bank is liable...
Sorry that happened to you!

Where did all these professional thieves come from? The first time my bag got stolen inside a hotel registration room, the video camera showed a man from Turkey (Police said). The second time my bag was stolen from my car, the young man who was used to distract you looked like someone from Algeria.... a white person. The third time my home got burglarized on March 27, 2015, I was fortunate enough not to come back home as originally planned, so did not see them, otherwise I would be hurt as my colleague.

That’s a strange question for a UN staffer to ask.
