I am starting a temp job in Lausanne - is it better to get the demi tarrif pass and can that be used in conjunction with a monthly pass? Will that also enable me to use buses in Lausanne? Just trying to work out the most cost effective way of travel! Thanks in advance for any tips

Lausanne is on a zone-based fare system just like Geneva. The problem is that it's not the same system (Mobilis vs Unireso). A regular ticket will cover only the rail portion of your trip.
On the SBB site, you can get a "city-city" ticket which does cover local transit in addition to the rail voyage. However, I don't think you can get a monthly pass with this same "city" option.
So I see two monthly solutions:
1. Get a pass for the rail segment. Get a second pass for Mobilis zone 11 (central Lausanne).
2. Get an abo generale which covers almost all of Switzerland for 375Sfr per month.
I think the first option is a little cheaper but the second is a much better value -- imagine getting on the train and going anywhere on a weekend just for the hell of it. =)

In re option #1: I just noticed that two Mobilis zones cost the same as one. So you might as well get both zones for Lausanne (11 & 12).
