Hi all. I am moving to Geneva Oct 1. I am very excited!
My long time girlfriend wants to come and live with me. I know it is probably very difficult for her to get a working visa of sorts, but wanted to see if anyone on this board had any ideas of other ways she could come stay in the country legally. Ideally something where she can earn some type of income.
Thanks in advance!

The only way other than marriage is if she finds an employer, who'd be willing to go through all the paperwork to back her work visa/permit. Without a prospective employer she'll be doomed to an unofficial stay bordering with illegality. 3 months stay is usually allowed before one should get visa of some sort, then she just needs to cross the border, which in Geneva is easy. That's my interpretation and anyway, since the border patrols are scarce, no-one will be able to check...
In order to be hired you two must consider her profession, her education, and if possible focus in a field, where she won't have an overwhelming competition of Swiss natives. Swiss laws (like all rich countries do) protect their job market, see. If she comes from outside EU, she'll be in an even worse position, because there are EU-Swiss treaties that among non-Swiss workers give a leg-up to citizens of EU countries. To be specific, if she is a chemist, doctor, scientist, engineer or a specialized teacher or similar, she will have a good chance. If she is a chef, salesperson, gardener etc. you can as well forget it.... There are too many natives that can do the low-qualified jobs.
Well, there is one more way... If you make really good friends with the right people, they may extend you a favor to secure a job for your girlfriend. Needless to say it is an uphill struggle all the way and if you're a newcomer, your chances of succeeding this way is also statistically negligible.
The prospects are grim... and there are dozens of couples at any time in the same situation. Good luck!

She is a US citizen and is currently in between jobs. She worked 2 years of Human Resources at Morgan Stanley in NY. She went to school for art education, so we were thinking maybe these could be 2 angles.
The thing is, all we would need is someone to sponser her working visa. They would not have to pay for her move since I would already be here with a fully furnished apartment.

Thank you, Kai, Cwilliam.
I heard (!) the UN administration receives a hundred job applications daily, but perhaps the NGOs are not as flooded.

Oh, cheer up, you guys!
There are gazillion of UN organizations in this town - HR is very generic field, why not to try? Especially, if she will aim at lower level, or junior level positions, it sholdn't be so complicated.
Here is our organization's website to look for vacancies, for example:
http://www.who.int/employment/en/

Michael,
She could register to one of the local universities, and then get a student visa (allows here to stay here legally, but not to work).
There's several American and English-speaking Unis in Geneva, like www.webster.ch.
Good luck!

good option. However, it might take minimum 3-4 months to get one if she's lucky.
