Birth formalities in Geneva

We are expecting a baby next month and I as we are not maried or Swiss, I have been warned that the administration formalities are considerable. I have done a lot of research on hoes to Internet and contacted the canton de Geneve but remain a little lost as to the process., especially then 'enregistrement de l'enfant'

1) confirmation of paternity - I understand that this can be done before or after birth (no questions here)

2) birth certificate - I understand that this will be provided at the hospital and that the baby will have the mothers surname if you are not married, and the fathers name will be included if a recognition of paternity has been completed.

3) registering the enfants - must be done within three days of birth. Question: do both parents need to register the enfant? I ask as my partner is still waiting for his work permit after 5 months and apparently this is required to register the enfant. Furthermore a certificat de celibat is required which requires a visit to the British consultate in Berne (a pain but possible to obtain).

if I alone can register the enfant then no problem as I have all the documents. If we both gave to do it then hopefully the work permit will arrive in there next few weeks Otherwise we've got a problem.

if anyone has been through this and can offer any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

rachel

Where are you planning to deliver? I can't help you much because I am married, and stopped listening at the 'preparation naissance' course pertaining to this :p *sorry* BUT the midwife seemed to know of every scenario and regulation possible. Can you contact yours? Or ask your OB for advice on where to look? Or even your embassy?

Sorry again, but just wanted to wish you 'courage' for negotiating the quagmire.

Not sure if things have changed since 2010 or if it differs with nationality but here is how mine went.

1. Gave birth at the hospital and received a certificate of live birth.

2. With this I went to la mairie ( this depends on where you have the baby) with the following documents my birth certificate (which had to be less than 6 months old) certificate of celibacy (less than 6 months), I didnt have a permit yet so I got an attestation from the OCP to say Im waiting for my permit, and a copy of my passport. The child is given my name from the hospital.

3. The father went to do a recognition of the child. He does not need much just his ID. PPort and permit or attestation.

4. Birth certificate is given for 30chf for an international one and 15chf for a swiss one.

You should also register with your consulate after the birth to obtain nationality documents

Hi Marcy,

thanks for your useful reply.  I have a couple more questions for you which I hope you can help with:

1) did the birth certificate have just your name or the fathers name as well (or does the fathers name not get added until you've done the reconnaissance de paternite?)

2) when you registered the baby, again was it just registered under you or also under the father too?

thanks for your help.

1) We had some issues so the recognition was not done immediately so it had just my name. my friend who had a baby the same time and the father did the recognition immediately the birth certificate came with both names. I had to get a second one which was such a waste of money coz he did the recognition a week later.

2)The baby is registered under the mother if you are not married. The father is just a formality (not mean to be rude).
