Bluewin TV Plus - not sure?
We had Bluewin TV Plus installed in our apartment (near Montreux).  That's the system with 120 channels including some High Definition channels, the wireless internet and it's all delivered over the telephone line.

Since having it installed we've noticed that 1.) the stations are slow to change from the remote control.  That is, it takes a second or so from pushing the remote button until the station changes.  It doesn't sound like much but it's very frustruating! especially if you're switching between a number of channels.  2.) the interent connection seems to drop out occassionally which it didn't do before. and 3.) the internet connections seems slower than before.

Has anyone else had problems like this with Bluewin Plus?  I'm not sure if it's a problem or whether it's just the way the system is.  I'm not that great with French and it's a bit of a challenge for me to call up Swisscom and explain this!

any internet system ( i use cablecom ) depends on the bandwidth available to the end user at a particular time. if there is a lot of traffic on the network you will notice considerable slowdowns at particular times. providers are always having to increase the total bandwidth they ultimately have ( they have to BUY more bandwidth from their provider) in order to keep up with the growing number of users on their network.

a satellite system will allow you to receive the total bandwidth for the tv programs with no slowdowns and a one time payment for equipment . all the channels you receive on bluewin and more are available with no monthly charge via satellite AND there are more HD channels available. with my 70cm dish on my balcony i receive 4 satellites, 1000's of channels (4 in HD). lots of film channels in english as well.

with any provider for tv, be it bluewin, cablecom etc, you are always subject to what they decide to put on their network, while via satellite, you can receive whatever is broadcast.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!  Interesting that it does seem to be OK for Whovian in Geneva but then we have problems, so I guess like Epicure says it is very variable.  I don't think we can have satellite dishes in our building, I don't think there are any on the balconies and it was in fact the manager of the Regie who recommended Bluewin Plus to us.

It sounds like Swisscom would be aware of the bandwidth they have in the area and the demand on it.  Hopefully they will improve the system and I will contact them about it in the hope that they also react to Bandwidth problems based on feedback to customers.

The good news is that the channels and picture quality are great and the High Definition is very impressive, and that CHF29/month is a pretty nominal cost.

Thanks again for the help!

to check you down and up link speed on the net, go to: http://www.speedtest.net/

you can see if your are getting what you pay for and at what times the speed increases or decreases during the day. from 5 - 8pm the speed usually is slower, as lots of school kids come home and surf :-)
