I would really like to cancel my sky. My sky box broke. Someone said if I buy a freeview box from the uk I would be able to watch tv for free here in Geneva. Does anyone do this? I also heard that a sky box should pick up some channels like bbc without paying subscription. Can anyone advise please? Many thanks.....

I have a "normal" (free-to-air) satelite set-top box and I can watch all the Freesat channels (BBC, ITV, CH4&5...). You probably need an 80 cm disk for good reception.

I stopped my subscription more than a year ago. Now I get only free to view channels. here is a link to a list of the channels you would get free of charge:

i have this one and it's, excellent.
i ordered mine from satbuyer in the uk
http://www.satbuyer.co.uk/technisat-hdfs-freesat-hd-digital-box-p108.html
everything worked fine. if you have an external disk drive ( 40-60 sfr ) you can automatically record from the electronic program guide which displays 7 days of uk programming.
bbc, itv, channel 4, channel 5, and many more. there are 5 HD channels as well.

I also have a freesat box, bought in the UK and works fine over here. I even use a small flat sat 'dish' so not to upset the commune.

can you get Sky Sports or do you need to subscribe specifically to them?

With Freesat you only get the 101 odd channels that are free to air in the UK, e.g. BBC, 1 to4, ITV 1 to 4, CBS channels, E4, Film 4, CNN etc etc. If I could find a way to get SkySports I'd be really happy !

sky sports is only available with a sky sat receiver and a paid subscription. also the sky box is limited in that you are unable to adjust for the various parameters used by other channels ( fec and sr are fixed)
there is no Disec switch capability, so you can't have a multi satellite system.

Swsscom TV Plus subscription that I have, CHF111/month, includes a looooot of the British TV channels - BBCs, ITVs, CH4&5, etc., as well as some of the US channels with no additional charges - and it is not only for watching TV. It is "all included" with a very fast internet connextion and telephone line "all in one". It comes with a High Definition compatible hard-disk recording box (2 TV programmes can be recorded at the same time) + Video (films)-on-Demand function. With this subscription, tel calls with Swisscome fixed line numbers are no charge. You can programme TV channel recording in distance via internet from a computer, too, from anywhere in the world if the IN connection is available.
I enjoy a lot the U.K channels & films on demand (the same (HD quality) or less (normal TV quality) price per film as that of a rental DVD shop.)

Hi all,
Swisscom is fine I suppose but don't forget that with a simple small dish pointing at 28.2 and any Universal satellite reciever or Sky box you can have all the channels you get with swisscom TV for FREE.
The best way to go if you dont want to be paying every month is to purchase a Humax Freesat box with the 320gb hard drive. With this you can record 2 things at once and have the built in TV guide.
I bought mine at www.williams-services.ch who are based here in Geneva and stock all the Sky and freesat boxes as I have heard some storys of people buying them overseas then having faults with the box and it being a nightmare to post it back etc. At least if you buy locally you can return it easily or call the engineer out.
Or if you really want the whole hog just subscribe to Sky TV and you can have the Sports and Movies all in HD.
But to be honest I really can not reccomend the Humax box enough it really is a top piece of kit. You can even up load your photos and music to it.
HOPE THAT HELPS. GOOD LUCK.

A more technical but workable solution is to have your PC or MAC connected to your tv and use it as a media centre. To do this you need a VPN connection to the UK - basically means you get a UK IP address for 8CHF per month. http://www.my-expat-network.co.uk/. You also require a good broadband (min 4MB) then you can also watch BBC, ITV C4 etc for free on their iPlayers .
You can then also subscribe to Sky's SkyPlayer but to do this you need to give them a UK address, telephone number and pay via a UK credit card or bank as this service is only currently available to UK residents. If you download the full SkyPlayer application which is an option for PC's then you can also record Sky programs you subscribe too and their free-view channels.
