Bookworm,

Domain names are managed by registrars on the internet which keeps registry of all the domain names. Then these registrars sells the domain names either by them selves or through resellers.

From time to time, reselllers do go out of business so its better if you get your domain from one of these registrars (www.enom.com or www.godaddy.com - selected by Google for their Enterprise services)...

Once you have a domain, then you would need a hosting package which could be any where, and get your domain name pointed to that hosting package by modiying the nameserver configurations (pretty simple through your domain name provider's interface).

I suggest you get a domain name via Google Apps (http://www.google.com/apps/). This way you would be able to use gmail as email for your domain name (all done behind the scenes for you).

Once sorted, then take up a hosting package with godaddy.com or some one esle and follow the steps i provided earlier..

If you have more questions, then message me directly and i would be glad to help you..

Omer

CH domains are managed by Switch.ch, the Swiss university network. So you should get Swiss domains names there. Costs 17CHF/year.

For hosting, you can go anywhere, doesn't have to be in CH. I use hostorama.ch, which I like, and it's cheap, 3CHF/month, for up to three domains. It all depends on what you need (PHP, .Net, databases, etc.)

Not sure if this is any help, but here's my experience:
 I have
tried namecheap before and have used it mostly along with email forwarding. Haven't had any
problems with it (other than a lag for emails forwarded from this domain), and it was fairly
cheap:
http://www.namecheap.com/
They do
.com of course, but I don't think they do CH, thought they do .eu domains. There is also
godaddy which offers similar kind of service at low prices, but I haven't tried
them.
Haven't tried google, swiss.ch, or
streamline.
Other than that, I suggest you to also check the forums
on the net for who offers best service/prices, etc.

http://switch.ch/  is the swiss internet control
http://infomaniak.ch/  is a good host you can probably get a domain and host package with them easier.
we buy our .com domains here http://www.godaddy.com/default.aspx  not sure if its any better or worse than others but it was never a problem.
