Buying a TV

Hi guys,

Do you have any recommendations about which the best place to buy a tv in Geneva (or surrounding area)?

I am not sure if it is cheaper to buy it in the german side, France or in Geneva itself.

Thanks.

Well the stork Media Markt is pretty good prices and is same price in all parts of Switzerland. See them in Carouge and also in Meyrin.

Note due to the recent swiss Deflation, prices have been going down for few years ands is good time to buy.

Dont got to Fust or Fnac, more expensive.

www.toppreise.ch is a great reference for Suisse prices and the online prices are generally a fair bit better than the in-shop price.

I did not find pricing in Euros (France) to be suitably better in order to justify buying across the border and driving it in.

Having said that, i recently bought a new TV from Media Markt (near Lausanne) and they matched an internet price in-store so that I could walk away with the product.

Have a look around any of the shops and when you have decided what you want take down the model and order it from digitec.ch. Guaranteed to be cheaper and the have really good customer service.

January is a good month to buy, there should be plenty of discounted products especially towards the end. I find the shop assistants to be completely useless so I do my research online and walk at the shop with 2 or 3 models in mind. I compare the prices online and in the shops, I got mine at Conforama at the same price as the lowest online price I had found.

Things to keep in mind when shopping for big screen TVs:

1. Do not use the "picture quality" you see in the shop to make a decision, most modern TVs have a special "shop" setting that is completely unrealistic. Trust the online reviews from people who tested them in a variety of conditions.

2. When buying from the shop, big screen TVs are too big to fit in most cars, if you have it delivered at home by the store it adds additional time and money.

3. Big screen TVs are sensitive to transport, if you buy it online and it arrives damaged you may have a hard time dealing with the online seller from distance. A friend experienced it with a TV which arived with a broken screen. It was a hassle to get a refund.

digitec.ch is good, but still if you have a problem, its a hassle to ship it back for warantee. but with Media Markt, the prices are good and if in first 30 days, they normally will replace it, but more than that, i dont know. I do agree also Conforama is good prices but there customer service ok, but its one of the best prices. Both Conforama and Media Markt have very big selections and alot of sales right now. Both have stores/close to eachother in Meyrin.

Wow if you have alot of time on your hands, 'catalin' ideas are good.
