Buying a TV in neighbouring France?
I just moved to Ferney and need to buy a TV. Are there good specialized stores nearby (BUT in StGenis is the only one I am aware of)? Or would it make sense to buy the set (TV with blue ray home cinema) in Geneva (FNAC or interdiscount) and take it to Ferney, paying the extra French VAT? I do speak French so language is not an issue.

There is a big Champion hypermaket in Ferney, you can try there. Normally the electronics are cheaper in Switzerland though. Why bother to pay the French VAT though, if you put it in your car and it's not visible they will not stop you at the customs. If you PM me I can even give you the location of a small customs office for Ferney, that is always deserted ;)

Lastly, if you know exactly what is the model that you want, have a look at toppreise.ch. You can order it online and it's usually cheaper than the store.

Hello,
Just be careful of something.  I'm not an expert so don't know exactly what it is about; but when I bought my TV here in Switzerland, they asked me if I wanted to take it to France, because then it must have "..... option"    It seems there is a difference between TVs in France and Switzerland.
So, better ask the saler about it  :-)

TV's in France work on the SECAM system and I believe the Swiss system is PAL.  Consequently you need to ensure that the TV is multi-standard and can receive both or you're gonna get your programs in B&W with no sound.  Unless you stick to French TV.

Thank you all for helpful comments. I compared proces from FNAC Geneva and BUT (France) and to my surprise the handful of identical TV's were either same price or more expensive at FNAC than at BUT. I bought the TV at BUT, although their customer service is not good. I should have probably studied the TV's there and then order the TV by net, would have saved couple of hundreds.
