Buying a car privately - how do you get Swiss plates?
Hi,

can anyone advise how I would go about actually processing the purchase of a second hand car privately in geneva? Presumably I need to organise some driving plates in my own name from the canton prior to purchasing, so can anyone advise how you do this? I am happy organising insurance etc but am dumfounded by bureaucracy...

cheers!

Chris

I purchased a car privately very recently and here is what I had to do to get my car registered in Geneva.

1.  Get car insurance

2.  Have a valid driver's license

3.  Have a valid Swiss Permit (B,C,G,L etc)

4.  Have the car registration/title from the previous owner

Once you have all these items, you  basically go to the automobile agency in Carouge, fill out a form and show them the above items.  They will register the car in your name and give you a new number plate right there and then.

Hope this helps.

just one point: the car must have passed the "expertise" within the last 12 months or they wont register it and you will be stuck with that cost!!!!

so make sure that the car you buy ( you can see the date of the last expertise on the grey card- "carte grise")

PS: unless the seller doesn't specifically say in the written bill of sale, the car has a 1 year guarantee. But, normally the seller will write "dans l'etat" or "en etat" which means as is and no guarantee.

remember "Buyer beware"

Hi.

Regarding the process of car purchase (or selling) does anyone have a template I could use for the bill of sale?

French and english translated versions?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you to those above...  I am about to do the same thing... so just to check they will actually give me the plates in Carouge to attach to the car then and there (I don't have to go to another garage etc.). Also, is getting a parking permit (in person) reasonably quick and straightforward?

Doing these things for the first time in Switzerland is a bit of a mystery... all will be revealed hopefully!

Any other tips?

Thank you,

James

If you are comfortable with your "reading" french/german/itlaian (or willing to use google translate), TCS (Touring Club Swiss) is a great source of help in buying used cars, getting insurance (especially for neighboring countries like France, Italy, etc.), roadside assistance, etc.  It is the equivalent of the Automobile Association in english speaking countries.  But in typical Swiss style, seems to be much more comprehensive and internationally focused.

TCS even has a used car inspection service which found a fault (quickly corrected by the seller) in my recent purchased Volvo which was being sold by one of Switzerland's Volvo dealers (though 5 years old, the car looked and felt like new!).  My experience with buying a used car in Switzerland has been the best I have ever had on three continents.  But it does pay to understand and know the system that most Swiss follow.

Good luck!
