Buying a cheap used car/Van HELP

Hello all! I need some opnions or experiances with buying used cars here in the Geneva area? My husband and I have been her for over 8 months and would like a weekend car but we will only be here for another 18 months.

We are looking to spend under 5000chf. Is it hard to get and older car registered?

And is there anyone that you have bought from that you think gave you a good deal, or somewhere we can buy one?

Thanks for all your help!

Have you considered car sharing as an option? In your situation this seems perhaps a better fit than going through the hassle of buying/ registering a car and then trying to unload it 18 months later, especially if you are only going to use it on the weekends. Have a look at www.mobility.ch.

We have looked at car sharing but it is hard to get an automatic that we would need and when our family is here in the summer we will need it for longer periods of time.

We bought our car from ROC. They have a wide variety of cars at a wide variety of prices. Obviously you will pay a slightly higher price going through a dealer then a private sale but they check the car before they sell it and also you do have some come back if there are any problems with it.

For less than 5k CHF a car is going to be pretty old (unless maybe you can find a low-cost model like a Logan)...the problem in Switz is that labour is expensive, given that old cars tend to need more servicing/repairs than newer ones.

The biggest point when buying is that the car should have a recent (< 6 months) "expertise". If possible get it inspected by the TCS.

If you're just looking for a weekend car I'd suggest you look at Mobility car-sharing, or hiring cheap cars which you can do for less than 50 CHF per day.

Good luck!

If you really set on buying, you can try the website www.autoscout.ch which has a fairly extensive listing of used cars for sale in Switzerland (you can search by location, make, model etc.). The site, however, is not available in English. Also check out the auto ad section in the local free paper GHI (comes out Thursdays). Otherwise ROC is a good option  and does offer extra security of being a recognized garage so if you have problems you have a better chance of having things resolved to your satisfaction.

Emily: returning to the US after 18 months?  Find an expat selling a US car and take it with you when you leave.  The poor resale value of a US car here in Switzerland means that you'll get more car for your money.  You can also take it back to the US when you go.
