Buying a scooter in Geneva

Dear all, I know nothing about scooters apart from what I just learnt on this website. I need to buy one quickly, having just changed jobs and finding it too far for other means of transport. I guess I ll go for a 50cc, I don't really care about the look and I don't want to spend much on it. It just needs to get me from the end of Champel to the other end of Paquis quickly and safely, possibly even in light rain?!

Can anybody recommend a certain scooter or a shop? I guess I m better off buying new rather than used if I know nothing about them? What should I make sure the scooter has?

Anyway, thank you for any tips!

Domi

Hey Domi,

It's easy part: scooter shop.

However, make sure you may drive it! Do you have any A/A1 driving licence?

I heard that law was recently changed and you can't anymore drivr 50cc on your car driving licence base.

If this part is OK, I recommend ScooterScoop (next to Charlie O'Neills Pub). You may try to find something is Swiss German (it's often cheaper: www.commerce-moto.ch), but looks like you are in rush.

Buying a scooter in France Voisine is also a solution and most of the shops doing the customs part for you.

Ps. I recommend to get insurance- there's thefts all everywhere....

Cheers, M

1000chf is little amount of money for a scooter (welcome in Switzerland), but I will not say it's not possible to find one.

Check at the shop and at autoscout.ch- biggest website with auto/moto ads.

I'm sure you will find something. However, you have to know that 50cc scooters are getting "old" and used super quikly (ex: 3 years might be already a crap, but all depends from the owner and how he was taking care of)

I know it's easy to say, but I would buy a new one. It's simply so much more safe. I liked the SYM which are cute, good quality and not that expensive.

But as I said, you will need driving licence A1/A.

Nobody will tell you that- garage want to sell a scooter and insurance company get an extra client. The day you will be stopped by the police/ have an accident you might problems.

That's what happened to my friend.

That is not very far, did you think about an eBike? Something like this? You may be faster than on a Scooter given the bike lanes around the place.
