Buying electricals from UK for use in Geneva

Hi all,

I bet this topic has been discussed a million times but I need a quick definitive answer please you techies out there.

Just returned from London wanted to buy an electric can opener and a bread machine, long story short I was sure I could just switch the plugs and use in Geneva just fine, but the assistant at John Lewis scared me in to thinking it just wouldn't work, he went to ask the "expert" that said nope...no can do , so i left dissappointed and deflated....no bread for me...help!!! is this true...surely not......the lady in the line next to mine, advised I don't do it, she said just to buy in Geneva, I have bought most of my stuff here, but really wanted these two particualr items...HELP!!!

Uk appliances work fine in Geneva.

I am unsure if you can swap plugs though. I have yet to see a european plug that you can wire in a  cable like you get in the uk. But you just need to buy an adaptor for UK plugs to a two pin euro socket.

I moved to Geneva from the UK in January and I am currently using all my electric appliances bought in London (hoover, TV, hair-drier etc.). I just put adaptors and they are all working fine.

Hi B

Short answer is yesadaptors are fine for small devices like chargers laptops etc

For high wattage appliances I would not recommend using adaptors all you need is once you are here change the plugs from any bricolage shop. Yellow green is the protective earth   Blue is neutral, and brown is live.

Hi there,

We recently moved to Geneva and had all our plugs (UK and Australian) changed over by an electrician. The voltage was fine (240/220) so they just cut them off and put Swiss plugs on in their place.

They didn't charge very much, about 4 francs for each new plug plus their labour time. We were already getting lighting installed so the cost for changing the plugs was minimal.

It is great not having to use hundreds of adaptors any more, especially as the points here are so small, the big, chunky adaptors often don't fit, or you can only fit one on a three plug point!

Hope that helps.

I have a cat water fountain I got in the UK. It didn't burn out or anything just using the plug adaptor, however, the pump motor seems to be a bit weaker here. Same thing with my Danish hairclipper. Maybe appliances here are made to work with higher amperage than UK and Denmark ?

The easiest way i've found is to buy a few 4 ways in the UK and then just change the plug at the end to a swiss one. that way you only have to change one plug for every 4...

Genius

buy 1 or 2 uk multi socket and have that plugged in via an adapter or change the plug.  no one will advise it but it is possible to put the european 2 pin plugs in a uk socket that way you have both uk and european on 1 multi socket
