Buying furniture in Ikea geneva for France

Can anybody enlighten me with the possible procedures if I buy furniture in Ikea to bring then in France (Ferney-Voltaire).  IKEA does not deliver across the border so I need to hire a van and bring the stuff myself. In my understanding of EEA agreement there should not be a problem at the border, but people tell me I should be careful at the border.  Could I claim VAT return in Switzerland, or I should not bother and be happy that I pass without any hassle. What if I am bringing in used furniture. Any experiences advices?

 Many thanks,

Jasna

Dear Jasna,

I found this old post in the forum cause I have the same problem but the other way around: I would like to buy furniture in France and  bring them to Switzerland with a van.

Does anyone know whether that would be a problem?

As far as I know, you are allowed to cross the border with goods up to a maximum value of 100chf per passenger. So if you are 3 in the car you can transport 300chf with no charges.

You are supposed to declare goods over 100chf at the customs and pay the export tax. Now, frankly I never did... :-P

I called the shop, they told me they would deliver in Geneva, that I have to pay the difference between the Swiss and the French VAT, but they did not know if and how much I would have to pay to import heavy staff from abroad.

I mean, I purchased something from France once that was less than 2kg and I had to pay 27 CH (8% plus admnistrative expenses), and I know people in Switzerland pay to receive staff from abroad. However, I cant find anything in the internet that explains me exactly how much. Does it depend on the weight, on the size of the thing? No idea.

Hm. Did the same thing a couple of years ago, and this should actually work out to your advantage in terms of VAT. IIRC, the store handed me some paperwork stating that I paid French VAT (20%?) on the goods I was importing, The whole shebang got stamped by customs at the Ferney border crossing where I paid Swiss VAT (13%?). I then mailed said document back to the store, which reimbursed me on the French VAT. No further import duties, by the way. Again, it's been a while, so your mileage may vary.

Plus, I should've noted that this wasn't IKEA. Dang, where's the edit button?

Thanks rmike,

One more question: was the goods on your own vehicle or the transportation  happened via carrier?

Furnished most of our flat from Ikea Meyrin, Use a mates van or the 4x4. Always cross the border at Meyrin/Cern, (generally unmanned) never passed a thought about taxes etc.
