CAF France Social Security number

Hi everybody,

I'm a frontalier working in Geneva and living with my family in France. Me and my family have the Austrian citizen ship and we now received a form from the CAF asking for our social security number. Does anybody know which number we have to provide them with? Our health insurance is a private one from Alptis. There we have some number which would fit into the form, but it is the same for all three members of the family. On the other hand they also ask for a copy of the birth certificates, so it might be that they would like to know the social security number of Austria. Is anybody in the same or similar situation? I have to say, the whole bureaucracy for family allocations is starting to drive me crazy. Bringing together papers from 3 different countries takes forever and apparently there are few common standards for forms to facilitate this process.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: CAF France Social Security number

Hello!

Our situation is little bit different, but here is what I've done and what I think (DOUBLE CHECK ANYWAY CAUSE EVERYTHING CHANGES EVERY DAY!!!!):

1) U will get "allocation" for the kid(s) from Geneva, not from france, as u work in Geneva. But u must still get and have a CAF number in France, be "registered" at the french CAF. we don't get anything from them, just a newspaper time to time with very useful information AND, of course, they demand our "declaration des impots" to see our income, EVERY change in the family situation must be declared etc... the state is gonna ask for the CAF number all the time, so just get one.

2) call the french CAF and tell them that u don't have a french SS number, see what they say. we always leave that SS number line empty, cause we also have a private insurance. the best, go to the CAF in Annemasse and get a paper statment, cause in france only paper counts.

3) if u can, do get a french SS number, JUST FOR THE NUMBER ITSELF, even if it's useless in life, cause u'll need to write it in every state paper (and there are sooooooo many of them!!!!). but don't get involved with them in the turms of real insurance business, keep your private insurance. french SS is good only if u r jobless or have a very little income.

Good luck!

Oh, i forgot to mention about the birth certificate: ha ha welcome to the club  :)  u will have to provide it very often in frnace and almost for everything. and it must be "issued" within the last 3 months!

I don't know how it is in Austria, but in Armenia we get 1 birth certificate that looks like a passport, and that's for the life time. as the french demand the  "original" issued within the last 3 months, it's not possible if u r older than 3 months and have a single original for your life time. in this case get a certified translation from your embassy in france PLUS a letter explaining that in your country u get a birth certificate when u r born and that it stays with u until u die, and that the copy with certified translation for any matters is JUST FINE! (of course all these written with nice, beautiful, polite diplomatic word :) ha ha)

Good luck good luck good luck   :)

holy s... ! I already thought this is going to be complicated, but not that complicated! Well, I guess I will (at first) simply try to fill the SSN from Austria. Maybe they have at least some agreement within the European Union that this is fine. We will see. I will post the results here ;)

Many thanks for your advice!
