I've been interested in checking it out for a while but I've heard it takes forever to get a tour.
Have any of you gone to see it? If so, how did you find it? Was it worth the visit?
Thanks!

We've wanted to organise a glocals tour of CERN for a while, but never got to it. This Tue we'll email all glocals members who work for CERN and ask them if they can help.

I've done it, it's pretty cool.

A gentleman organized an event about a month ago... I'm waiting for the next one...

Official tours do take forever to get onto, but tours organized by individuals can happen in a jiffy. If there is interest, I can organize something. Be aware that you can't actually see the LHC nor the LHC experiments, just the visitor centers, unless you're willing to wait until early June, when a visit to the antimatter factory will allow you to see some experiments up close.

the tour in ealy June sounds fab - do you have the details?
yeah i would be intrested in this when in june
I'm thinking Saturday June 10...could propose an intro lecture, a visit of the ATLAS visitor center and of the antimatter facility and experiments. That would take a couple of hours, and I'd propose not to start too early in the morning...perhaps 10:30 or 11:00.
Alternatively, it could be during the week on a work day, but my guess is that would eliminate a good number of interested people....

Liv, great idea, Michael, thanks for the proposal. Would love to participate but I can't on the week-end of 11th of June (Saturday) It's Pentecost week-end, and I'm off to Burgundy (satisfaction of the body, vs. satisfaction of the mind :-)

Michael:
Great initiative, thanks! If you make it happen, OK with you if we announce it to all glocals members? What's the limit on the number of folks who can join the visit?
Thanks,
Nir

OK, had to change the date to Saturday, June 18, same time though. I'd have no problem with around 25 people, but if it's a few more, that's fine too. Sure, it can be announced more widely. And for those that miss it this time, I'll be happy to do repeats at a later date.

June 25 is great. I'm in !
Thanks Michael, that's great!
A few quick questions before we shoot out the info:
1. Is the date confirmed?
2. What are the hours?
3. Where do we meet?
4. Can kids come too?
Thanks again,
Nir

I'd like to attend as well.
Thanks very much for organizing this...

June 18, sign me up :) Do they take orders for antimatter?
Thanks Michael!
I would like to come, I can June 12 and 25, or any other date (not 18).
Thanks Michael!

I'm afraid it's June *18*, not June *25*. Hope that works for you as well.

1. Is the date confirmed?
yes, Saturday, June 18.
2. What are the hours?
I suggest to meet at 11:00; it'll take about 2 hours for intro, ATLAS visit center, and antimatter facility, since there's a bit of walking to do.
3. Where do we meet?
Right opposite of the end point of the 18 tram (heading to CERN), there's the reception building (on the *other* side of the road is the globe). It's a triangle-fronted building, and we can meet in front of it.

4. Can kids come too?
"Kids" above 12 can see the antimatter facility, kids below 12 can come along, but will have to stay outside when I show groups the antimatter facility and the experiments there (there's also a limit of 12 people at a time, so if there are more than 12, we'll have to have the rest wait outside and take turns). The other places are fine for them, and as an add-on after the tour, there's a Space-Odyssey'ish exhibition in the Globe that is adapted also for kids.
5. I would like to come, I can June 12 and 25, or any other date (not 18).
Unfortunately, that Saturday turns out to be the only one I can do in June. I promise to organize further visits later in the year, so you won't miss out.

@Michael: Thanks for organising this. You mentioned there would be 25 +some people, do you have a list of all who have confirmed their coming?
If there is one, pls sign me up as well. :)

Posted to the 'things to do' list. Those who already contacted me are in but I ask them to reconfirm via the 'things to do' interface, just in case they lost interest in the mean time ;)
