Can't get my i-pad online-HELP

Hello all,

I am in a pickle :(

I bought an i-pad last week from the U.S.A, and I can't get it online at home :(

I have been to the Apple store, it worked there, the guy reset the settings and said it should work at home, NO JOY!

Spoke to Apple help in Portugal 3 times yesterday, and Newcastle too-Total 2.5 hours- NO JOY!

It shouldn't be that hard right?

My network appears on the choices but my password doesnt get me in- I am SURE I have the right password.

I have 2 other i-pads online, a macbook pro and several PC's and mac minis, kinda lost about the whole thing.

Anyone with some advice please...totally frustrated :(

Thanks for any pointers.

If its a ipad meant for the US consumer market, it or the apple server might be unwilling to comunicate due to you having a ip suggesting you are not in the US, similar to how hulu and other internett tv services won't work outside of the US. I would not hold it against apple to do this sort of bull****. If it is the apple server, a solution could be to reroute you traffic through a US proxy, so as to appear to be in the US. For this you would need:

1. Access to a proxy (or server that can act as a proxy). I think you can do this with a US university computing account, if you have one or know somone who does.

2. The techological knowhow to route your traffic through said server. I don't know the specifics of how to do this. If you are technologically inclined, try googeling it. otherwise find a technical mac-head.

This ammounts to some work though, so double check everything simple, like that your password is correct (no caps-lock), you actually can reach the apple server(ping), etc...

hopes this helps

@henrik apple has *never* had any restrictions on the iPad, especially with wireless connections, which is what bookworm is talking about. From your response, I can see that you are no fan of Apple, and that's fine. But, misleading information is not helpful. Not to mention, daunting and a waste of the OP's time......

@bookworm what wireless network are you trying to connect to? Swisscom, orange, sunrise, etc? in some cases, you need to push a button on the router in order to connect....it will only connect during the 30-90 seconds tha the light on the router is blinking.

@helen while what you say is often the case, it SHOULDN'T be the case, especially since wireless passwords are usually *written* in lower case.

Thanks for the replies

Henrik- I was advised by the people at the Apple store that buying the i-pad in the U.S would pose no problems at all.

Zonker- tried that after reading yor post-NO JOY, got anything else for me :(

Helen- All in caps, yep checked that already and not a silly question, had that part covered already though.

Any other ideas anyone, it's got to be a simple issue surely!

@bookworm: did u try connecting by choosing "other" and make sure you have the same security protocol selected as it is configured on your router? (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.)

I had exactly the same problem, and it foxed me for hours, until....... I switched off my router and switched it on again.

If you have several devices, you could also be having a clash of IP addresses.  Usually an iPad should be configured to "assign IP address automatically".  Your address could be something like 192.168.1.2.

However sometimes that address has been set manually (the one ending in number 2).

1) If set manually, it may be clashing with another device using the same IP address.

2) Alternatively, it may be trying to connect to an IP address which is not offered by your router.  Most routers have IP address ranges from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255.  However some routers offer completely different ranges.  In that case, you can't connect.

Probably the best way to solve it as follows:

Restart your router.

On your iPad, make sure you "forget this network" and set it to choose the IP address automatically and then try to connect again from scratch, after re-starting your router.

Hi,

I always have this problem when I travel to China. The default network settings that the i-Pad detects are not correct. So I manually add the same network (using the "Other" option unders Wi-Fi Networks) provide my network namd and password and that seems to take care of it.
