Car Registration

Hi

We've brought a car in from the UK and we need to register it in Geneva for less than 12 months. Does anyone know how to do this or does anyone have access to information written in English?

Is the technical check only required if you have the car here for longer than 12 months or will we have to have that too?

Thanks

Hi,

You do have 12 months to register your car and exchange your driving license.

However, just make sure with your UK insurance company that you are still covered in case of accident since you now live in switzerland and that you imported the car, which with many companies is not the covered anymore.

Get a written confirmation that you are covered, to avoid having to pay all the expenses on your own if you get into an accident which can easily cost a fortune depending of the damaged vehicle or injuries.

If still insured you can wait to have it registered, and yes you will have to go through the technical control to get it registered, but don't wait last minute to do it as you may have to wait to get an appointment for registration.

If not insured or just for a short period, please note that Allianz (not Allianz24) can insure your car with your UK plate number for 3 months to give you time to prepare your car for the swiss registration.

And last but not least, as a glocal's member you can get discounts on your car insurance through Allianz.

Don't hesitate to drop me line or give me a call if you need further information,

cheers

Welcome to Switzerland Jay B!

Aymeric summarized it well. For the insurance, my experience with my UK collagues: unless specified otherwise, your basic UK third party liability insurance is valid in all EU countries. BUT! in case of accident, people and police forces may not be up to date with such details and will harass you until your company can fax a certificate. And Switzerland is NOT in EU. Therefore save yourself lots of stress and time: make sure you inquire and ask your inscurance to issue an "green card" that proves your coverage is valid in the country you will be driving in (i.e. Switzerland).

And just in case, the Allianz 3-month coverage works very well...

Feel free to contact me in case you need other advice

Hi Jay B,

I know that the "technical check" is pretty expensive, depending on the car, it can be more than 2'000 CHF. So you might think about buying a small car for the time spent here and sell it once you leave. I also believe your stearing is on the right, which is not at all convinient for driving here (toll's machine and tickets for parking are on the left, overtaking can dangerous, etc). You can call the "bureau des automobile et de la navigation" and ask for someone who speaks english to get all info.

Cheers,
Pika
