Clarification on Annual Pass on TPG and Half-Fare card

We are soon moving to Geneva, and looking at the transportation option, I notice that there is an Annual Pass for TPG (http://www.tpg.ch/en/web/site-international/fares-2015). The cost for the Geneva Canton is 500. I am unable to determine if having the half-fare card will further reduce the price (http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets/railpasses/half-fare-travelcard.html).

Thank you, and a happy New Year.

It’ll be easier to decide which of the TPG options will suit you best once you are here, because much will depend on the  distance between your home and your place of employment. Also, if you are a teacher, you’ll want to consider the school vacations, e.g., a monthly season ticket might be a more flexible option.

The CFF half-price season ticket is a good buy if you are planning to do a fair amount of rail travel in addition to the work commute.  If not, think twice.

Best, R.

Check with your employer's HR departement because some companies have a very reduced price for their employees.

Just like Ritchie was trying to say, are you going to be living in the Geneva TPG zone. As TPG is just for the greater Geneva area. I must say CHF 500 for one year is a bargain considering other options in geneva. But its all a personal choice.

Dispite employer reduced fairs, I dont believe they will be lower than 500 unless supsidized.

Thank you Ritchie, Ewa and Dave. We don't yet have a place of residence, but will heed your advice, and decide once we are in Geneva.

500chf/year is a bargain if you think about the cost of living here and compare that to the cost of public transport in other major European first world cities (the price went down in December).

The half fare card will help you in other places in Switzerland but not in Geneva if you already have the one year abonnement.

The half fare card reduces your daily bus tickets by 40% but only helps if you use thae buses two dayxs a week.  Otherwise a pass would be better.  Also I think you can claim tax reduction on travel if you live more than a certain distance from work and that will be easier to do with a pass than with individual tickets.

Fortunately I never had to travel to work in switzerland, the longedst distance being a commute of 7 minutes walking and that was reduced with each change of job finishing with 1min 50 seconds - appartment door to desk

I have the half fare card which is amortised with three full day train trips and would also get a bus pass except I use a bicycle a lot.

There is no need to do anything before you get here as both passes half fare and bus can be purchased over the counter provided you have a photo with you
