Clinique advice

I didn't find much in the archives, so here it goes...

It's that time of the year again and I'd like to do a medical checkup, since I never had to see a doctor here in Switzerland (knock on wood) I have no idea how to go about this.

I need to find a dentist, an endocrinologist, an ophthalmologist, and a lab where to get my blood tested, preferably close to each other and in the Meyrin/Cornavin area, speaking French won't be a problem.

Also, since my insurance is of the you-pay-first-we'll-pay-you-later kind, roughly how much do I have to expect to shell out for the three visits?

Thanks everyone.

My experience with docs: even the shortest visit will go up to 150 francs. Once i paid 500 bucks in a generalist including blood testing :s

((I should say I HATE this swiss system of "dont ask the price, just pay when the bill arrives". Even more because i have a high franchise. In my country we know how much the bill will be beforehand :s))

You may try the HUG, it's easier/faster to get consultations. Because docs here can 1) refuse you because they already have many clients or 2) suggest a visit in ... 5 or 6 months (both happened to me several times).

i also use this website a lot: http://www.amge.ch/

Good luck!

Apart from not having seen the bill yet Yell .. I found the process very easy. I live in canton VD but should be same. I looked up my nearest doctor, went to office to register and asked for an appointment, which i got next day, showed my insurance card, got a prescription for anti biotics, got them from pharmacy again with my insurance card.

Same with the kids, went to the paediatrician, registered them, appointment next day for a check up, they have a zero franchise so hopefully just 10% bill there.

I expect i'll get a bill from the insurance at some random time in the future, when i least expect it.

Paul,

If it's just a checkup I would recomment simply to do it in France. It depends if it's easy for you to get there.(Ferney-Voltaire?) Also, it depends on your insurance here in Switzerland. If your deductible is high, you should think about going to France.

I have as well a bad experience afer a check up with a doctor- I received a bill like if I was 2 steps from deth and it was just a check up..!!

I'm a bit like you- hardly ever need to see a doctor (except my 3 accidents :-), but luckily all fees  were taken in charge by my accident insurance).

For info medical visit with the "generaliste" in Ferney I have paid around 36 euros.

In Geneva I paid never less than 120chf.

Good luck!

hi Paul,

You have to check 1st how much your insurance is allowing you for this every 2 years general check-up. Mine allows only 800 chf so have a look at your policy before you look for doctors.

In general, HUG is very good for this.
Call their hotline and ask how you go about having a general check-up.

Hope that helps.

Typically, when you sign up with a new doctor here they will (quite correctly) want to run a number of tests to establish a baseline of information.  This will easily hit 1000 chf if it includes the standard set of blood tests, general check-up, chest X-ray and, of course, the follow-up visits to get / discuss results.

All external parties, such as the blood test lab and the radiologist, will bill you separately and additionally.

You should check your coverage and deductibles carefully before agreeing to any form of CAT, PET or MRI scan.

It depnds on your insurance: yoou can have a cheapest one wich works like a HMO, so you have to choose your general practionner from a list. He will make the check up and then ask for additionnal exams if needed. This is the reasonnable way, but you can find doctors who will ask for a ton of exams because they may be rewarded by labs, radiologists...

In the case of this assurance, you can even ask the doctor to send the bill directly to the insurance, you'll only have to pay 10% (put aside the franchise)

My general practioner is Dr Agoritsas (near Cornavin) and she's really reasonnable: we discuss together what is necessary to do or not., what this exam will imply... Very close to your needs and expectations. She's with "Reseau Delta" so she has to control costs versus benefits for your health, the aim beeing: good precautions=No need for a doctor!
