Control technique: advice on rules

Hello,

My 19 year old car had its  last "expertise" done in Aug 2011, some months before I bought it (March 2012.)

I knew that the next inspection should be due in a ciuple of years' time, but poeple kept telling me to wait and that they will send me the notifiction. It should have arrived in the middle of last year, but I got none. In the meanwhile I haven't been too proactive trying to get the inspection done.

I hope this doesn't spell bad news if I have failed to get the control technique done on time.

I was trying to figure out the rules from here:
http://ge.ch/vehicules/visites-techniques
but it does not mention of it is up to the owner to initiate the process. Any advice regarding the rules and action items would be of great help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Normally you will receive an invitation for a controle technique by post, before it's due. But today the Service des automobile in Geneva is facing an important delay, about 6 months! If for some reason you don't want to wait that long, you may contact them and ask for a priority appointment (022-3883030). You can't be fined because of the expired inspection, as it's their fault.

Thanks. That's reassuring to know. For sure I'd try to get done with this business asap.

Do you have some recommendations of places to get the car serviced pre-inspection? Will any old auto garage do?

I have no recommendation for a particular place. I advise you to go to a multibrand garage, as official dealers are most of the time pretty expensive. Just tell that you car will have the controle technique soon. The garage will check the same techn points, and will tell you what has to be done on your car to pass the controle technique.
