Could someone help me understand Income tax for foreigners please?

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are about to move to Geneva or somewhere nearby in Vaud. We're respectively form France and Italy. We're struggling to understand how much taxes will be deducted from our salary. We've found various calcuators on line, but they all seem to give different results.

Yes, we do know it varies based on salary, the municipality and from canton to canton...

If for instance in Geneva we earned 6000 CHF gross per month (72000 CHF per year) how much would we get net?

Thank you in advance

Tony

Hello Tony,

I guess you should be here with permit-B, so in this case:

1- avs 5.125%

2- chomage 1.1%

3- insurance 1.5% (depends on insurance company, just a bit vairable)

4- tax in source (this item is related to your status, marrid, kids, income), you can always find this info at this path: https://www.ge.ch/document/baremes-2017-perception-impot-source

so for your case (if you are not marrid and you don't have kid) 12.57%

5- 2nd-pillar, depends on your company, 6 or 7%

so I can say for your 72,000Fr annual income, monthly deduction is around 1600Fr

As Geneva and Vaud have different tax rates, you should seek professional guidance from the canton you wish to settle in. This is an utterly complex matter in Switzerland, as taxes are paid on three levels: federal, cantonal and communal.

I agree. You should also keep in mind that there are two different taxation systems for non-Swiss citizens who have not yet obtained a "C permit": i) the tax at source (usual system for a B permit holder) and ii) the taxation based on a ordinary tax return. The rules for determining if you fall under system i) or ii) are not the same in Geneva and Vaud.
