Could you recommend the towns to find an affordable flat room near Geneva downtown?

Hello,

I'm sado from South Korea.

I'm going to Geneva for my internship program next month.

I'm looking for a room to stay during my stay but it's def hard :((

Especially, i found it very pricey to live in downtown Geneva..

So Could you guys recommend towns where i can communte to Geneva?

I dont have much knowledge about the city so that this site is so helpful to me!

Thank you in advance!

You could try something on the French side of the border in Ferney Voltaire or Saint Genis.  Of course it all depends on where you need to commute to.

Will it cost lots money for transportation?

Ah.  To The UN Ferney Voltaire could be pretty convenient.  From Ferney Voltaire to the UN would be 10-20 minutes probably by the F bus.  It would probably cost a couple francs a day but you can buy longer passes but I don't have any information on those.

You can find some more information about public transport here:

2 important things:

1. Find out if you can live in France. Some nationalities (e.g. Russian) will need to live in Switzerland to keep their work permit.

2. Will you have a car? That makes a huge difference in terms of which locations are good for you.

Rents become cheaper as you move away from the lake.  A place like St Cergue might be an option but I doubt that you would like the commute.

Now i could get understanding about where to get flats..

I also have a few questions..

How much do you think it would be to get a room in Geneva downtown?

Is it easy to find a roomate to share one room with?

I'm also thinking about sharing one room with another roomate near lake if it's too pricey so that I cannot afford by myself.. >_<

From the city center of Annemasse (Hotel de Ville), it takes about 25 mins on a bike to reach the main railway station in Geneva. You can consider other cities like Ambilly or Gaillard situated closer to the border checkpoint Moillesulaz. Ciao & Good Luck

You might also try the Bellegarde area in France. By train, it's 25 minutes into the center of Geneva and the area (not Bellegarde itself, though it's improving) is really pretty. It costs me 65 euros a month for a "frontalier" train pass, which is just 2 euros a day so really peanuts. If you decide to live in places like Ferney, which are definitely closer, you'll have to deal with much higher rental costs than when you're in a less expat-filled area like Bellegarde.

There are two Bellegardes in France -- the close one is called Bellegarde sur Valserine. It's a 25-minute train ride into Geneva. Hope you can find it!

You may also resort to a newspaper called La Cote with an advert inside for a mere 20 francs. I live in Rolle and got five calls. Therefore things on offer exist within a radius of 35 km from Gve. It ranks between 500 to 1000 CHF.

If you put that you are a non smoker, you get many more calls from landlords.
