There's a photography shop at Place des Eaux-Vives, but it's extremely expensive. Chains such as Mediamarkt, FNAC and InterDiscount have a decent selection of entry-level cameras.
You can save a lot of money by buying online. I get my stuff in The Netherlands (and second-hand), but I've heard that this shop is quite good:

Thanks Edward for your help,
I just want to know if you have any suggestions for trusted websites that ship to Geneva, also If you know any info if I buy from amazon USA, - as it is always has the least prices - what is the expected taxes to be added from switzerland side?
Thanks,
Mahdi

Shipping from the USA starts at $50 or so. You'll pay duty which is about the same as local sales tax. You'll also pay customs admin fees. I think the fees can be avoided entirely if the seller is willing to pre-pay Swiss import duty ("DDP") but I don't know of any sellers willing to do this. I think these fees are generally around $40 per shipment.
In the end, you'll need to have a rather large order for it be worthwhile ordering from the US. Then you also have to deal with international warranty coverage.

that is huge! I was only ordering a tripod for less than 100 CHFs and like that it is going to be doubled!
does thos taxes apply for good shipped from france too? or as many have adviced to go in person and buy from there? :D
mostly I will try to check the local retailers, untill I decide what is better to do :)

I beleive that goods from the EU are treated in a similar fashion; the only difference is less expensive shipping.
When shopping for electronics in Switzerland, I use this price comparison site. Very helpful.

If you're going to order something from France or elsewhere in the EU you may as well have it shipped TO france as well. You may know someone who lives there, or you can have it delivered to a post office there (this is called 'poste restante', ask at the nearest post office near you).
You will officially still need to pay import duty when you cross the border, but if you take the tripod out of the box (and throw the box away) and carry your camera with you I don't think you'll get in trouble.
Frankly though, if you want to buy a tripod buy a decent one. Try to find some tripod ratings online, and spend around 300 Euros. If you plan to use it indoors get a sturdy tripod with a good head, from a brand like Manfrotto. If you plan to carry it with you during travel or outdoor activity, go for one that is a good comprimise between sturdiness and weight. Slik makes some really good lightweight tripods.
Trust me: I started out with some cheaper tripods and pretty soon you want a better one.

Thanks for the advice, I know I will eventually need a better more professional tripod, but currently I can't afford paying too much for it, I am paying all expenses during my stay in geneva, and it is already too much!
For now I just need an affordable tripod that does the job - even if good used one -,
