Driving Lesson in Geneva

Hi gLocals mates,

Do you have experience in:

1- refresh lesson for driving (cars) in Geneva? perhaps for 2 to 5 times so to familarlize oneself to the street?

2- how does parking in Geneva work in the city center? I mean, do i need to buy sticker or put some coin on certain machine etc?

3- What is needed to immediately drive in Geneva? (before 12 months, as I understand after 12 months of living here, one must change the original driving license with the swiss version).

Cheers,
Dom

Hi Dom

On-street parking in Geneva has 3 types of space that I can remember:

1. White spaces with a 'Parcometre collectif' sign, which means you pay and register (usually the car number plate but could be the parking space number). Often a max of 60 or 90 minutes during office hours.

2. White unlimited parking spaces (no parking signs indicating meters).

3. Blue spaces. For these you need to display a cardboard dial showing the time you arrived (to the next half hour). You can get these free in police stations, also from insurers, garages etc). You get one hour's parking during office hours, then you have to move the car.

Don't park on yellow spaces, in front of pedestrian crossings or on bus or cycle lanes. Some people park entirely on the pavement if it's wide, but I don't know the regulation for this, it seems to be tolerated at night.

To drive here you need a valid licence (Swiss or foreign) and insurance for the car. You need to carry the car's "carte grise" ie registration document.

I may be able to help with refresh/navigation lessons, send me a message.

The Test at the TCS (Touring Club Suisse).

Am a 'young' driver (passed my licence in Germany only four years ago). When I wanted to change it into a Swiss one they ony provided me with a temporary one and want me to pass two more tests at the TCS.

So I need to prepare and finally drive in Geneva.
