Tamara,

If you can afford it, I would recommend getting it in Switzerland, as its valid forever! That being said, I'm not really sure of the cost and duration in France as I never considered it. When I was getting my license in Geneva, I had an instructor who spoke to me in English. Also, the written test can be taken in English and the driving test will accommodate those who don't speak french.

Hi Tamara,

I was just wondering if you had any luck last year in finding a driving school that teaches in English please? I'm looking for one at the moment and would really appreciate any leads.

Many thanks,

Emily

Hi Emily,

Have a look at Angloinfo.com Geneva, put driving lessons in the search box, there are a few instructors/schools which offer lessons in English.

Good luck

Daniela

For taking the test in France .....

I live in France and I looked into this for my son  - the news was not good. My information is 12-18 months old and I was asking about a 17 year old, maybe things are different for 'adults' but this is what i was told for him   :-

First you have to do a theory test in French  - It is possible to do it in Enlgish but to do it in English you have to pay for an official French translator, the nearest is in Lyon. When I asked there was a 5 month waiting list . If this booked translator  had a court case on that day he would treat that as a priority, would cancel and you would have to wait again. The other problem is that despite quite some research and several phone calls i was unable to find material for learning the French highway code in English !

Then once you passed the theory test you can go for driving lessons - and not before  - and unlike the UK, ONLY the official ones - you cannot practice with freinds adn family  (this may be only if under 18) , i was quoted 2-3000 euros for the official driving lessons

Then when a 17 year old passes his test  - he has to be accompanied until he is 18.  Fair enough BUT , he can only drive in France - he cannot cross the border !    As all my sons freinds live in Switzerland and he has no need to drive in France,

so ... sadly we gave up all this as a bad job and said he will learn when he is back in the UK !   He is 18 and has still not passed his test :(

if you can do it in Switzerland do  - otherwise I would recommend going back to the UK and doing an intensive course there . On a postive note although the swiss tests are not easy i know many people who have passed them.  I have no idea if you are 'allowed' to do so if you live in France.
