EU National wait times for permits in Geneva

Hi all!

I just received a work contract that is conditional on obtaining a work permit. The company will apply for one for me. I am an EU national and was wondering if anyone knew the current wait times in Geneva to get a work permit.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Gabrielle,

as Augusto, I waited 3-4 months before to receive it (permis B) and I am an EU citizen.

The secretary at university (I work there) told me that more or less the waiting time is a couple of months but it depends. According to this person, the Service étrangers et Confédérés cannot refuse to give the permis to an EU citizen that has a regular contract so they are "more relaxed" and "waste time".

I hope it will be faster for you.

Ciao

Danilo

I think the standard wait time for an EU national is 1 month and it is more less automatic. You would have to be on the interpol wanted list or something similar for them to refuse.

Wow thanks everyone! It seems that there is quite a difference between everyone's wait times. Hopefully not too many people working within the Canton administrative offices will be on vacation this month. I guess I will just have to be patient and wait and see!

Btw, which EU country are you a national of? It says Canada on your profile. Switzerland has made some different rules for some of the new members.

But if you are of the older members then I was told your employer does not need to wait for the decision. They just have to send the documents and as soon as the office recieves them you can start working. So this is typically around one month from when you have agreed with the employer you will start working there.

I hold dual nationality with the Czech Republic. As of April 31st the rules have changed, and I am now on Tier 2 instead of Tier 3.

I am just worried about waiting a few months as some others have mentioned :(

I am  Czech. I came a few months earlier so I had to wait around 3 months. Now CZ is considered old EU country which means you dont need to wait they just send the docs there and thats it you can start.

I think I waited 1 or 2 months, but my employer at that time just let me work from day one I arrived and I also got my wage paid before my permit arrived.

There is a difference between when your actual permit arrives and between when you can legaly start working. The document arrives 1-2 months after you are allowed to start working.

got my permit in 7 days.  Rules for Czech Republic citizens may be different as old and new EU countries are not always treated equally

If your company is applying for you they will have an HR department which is doing it or they use an agency.  These are the ones who will give you the correct answer.

Failing that you get them to give you the reference number and telephone number of the permit issuing department and you call them I think it is called Office cantonale de population

I have found Swiss organisations are very helpful giving information.  If for some reason they cannot, they will tell you why.

Posting a question like this on glocals will get you a million different answers and you will be more confused than before.

Having said that, if the system still exists that a L (lapdancer) permit is offered because the B permit quota has been used up, with the promise that you will get a B permit in 18 months, this is perfectly OK as the years you hold an L permit count towards your C permit.
