I am thinking about renting in Eaux Vives. I will be singing at the opera house. Is this a safe place for women at night and is it a decent distance to the opera house?

My young sister lived there. She loved this place...
Don't think, just rent. You are quite new to Geneva, aren't you? Here people don't think about renting, they are running around hoping to seize basically any opportunity to rent.
The distance from the Opera (place Neuve) to Villereuse stop in Eaux-Vives, for example is 10-12 min by tram(direct connection). For other stops check www.tpg.ch

You can also walk up and over the hill (where there is the old town) in about 20 mins to the Opera house. Although that might not be a good idea late at night! I lived in Eaux-vives and found it very comfortable and didn't feel unsafe.
I second Evgenia - if you have an offer for a flat ANYWHERE in Geneva - take it for goodness sake :)

It's Eaux-Vives for me in February, at least for a couple of months. It was either that or plateau de Frontenex which i thought was a little far from town.
Now I need to sort out parking which could be interesting :-/

I lived in Eaux-Vives for most of my first two years in CH. Then work took us away from Geneva for quite a while but we always returned for look-see visits when on home leave.
Eventually we returned to base and were fortunate enough to find something affordable in Eaux-Vives and have stayed put ever since.
The location is great: just a couple of minutes to the lakeside; ditto two of Geneva’s most beautiful parks; a large swimming facility; 10-15 minutes more and you’v reached the city centre, the Old Town. the Opera House, Uni, the flea market and loads more.
There are plenty of shops and other amenities and even places on the right bank are easily accessible thanks to good public transport.
So don’t hesitate if you’ve found suitable accommodation.
Good luck!

We live in Eaux-Vives. It's LOVELY. All the convenience shops, very good affordable restaurants, family-oriented area, a stone's throw from the lake, the parks (most enjoyable in the summer) yet still very well served by public transport. You just walk up to the Rue de la Terrassière and number twelve tram takes you to the opera.
I've lived on my own for a couple of years at one point rue de Montchoisy which used to be a bit more reassuring than today - nonetheless these days I do not feel threatened and I take basic precautions: if I go out at night I just stick to the lit places and carry pepper spray in my pocket (the only legally authorized weapon in Geneva).
This being said, it is best to avoid the lake side at night in any point in the year if you're by yourself. Security isn't what it used to be... But that applies to the whole city anyways.
