Engagement ring purchasing in Switzerland/Europe
I'm looking to buy a diamond engagement ring. I'm willing to fly (if it makes sense) to get a ring with a higher quality of workmanship and/or better value. I've been told that Antwerp has a ton of scam artists and jewelers in Switzerland are overpriced for what you get. Where is a boy to turn? Somewhere in the EU? Is that recommended?

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to design your own and have someone make it? Are you looking for classic 'Tiffanys' style solitaires? Is the overall aesthetic or the stone more important? And don't forget antique pieces with history as an option. Most important however....What is your fiances taste like? Modern and clean? Baroque? Big honkin diamond? :)

I'm not getting married, but I'm living in Belgium and I must say Antwerp is very known for his quality standard of diamonds. You can always try it...it's a great city so the trip is certainly not forgotten

I'm not looking to do any designwork. I'll leave that up to the experts. She loves the clean, simple lines of a solitaire. Nothing art deco-y or rococo. I'm willing to look at 3-stones if they're pretty as well.

Check BAUNAT.com ... fine diamond jewelry and engagement rings, they opened their showroom in Geneva lately. Certified diamonds from Antwerp, but compare prices

Hi Sevens,

This is the place where I got my wife's engagement ring in London's Hatton Garden district (the UK version of Antwerp). All rings are custom made and have an incredible range of any size and budget. Well worth checking out. Also when it's sent to you in Switzerland you should be able to detax it. (Who says romance is dead?) Laughing

Hi Rich,

i know that if you buy at Baunat and the delivery is in Switzerland, you pay the net amount to Belgium (without VAT) and you pay Swiss VAT to Fedex at the moment if delivery.

For the convenience of rhe customer, they have a showroom in Geneva where you can have a loik at the models and check sizes.

You can also go to Antwerp, pick it up yourself, detax it and import it yourself in Switzerland. Knowing that Swiss VAT is only 8%, it's giod to be in Switzerland?

Enjoy the sun today...

Well, if you are looking to buy diamond engagement ring, I believe you should opt for online jewelry stores, instead of wandering here and there. Large inventories are available on such jewelry stores who regularly update their stock with the detail specifications of every piece. One fine example of such jewelry store is Monogramonline.com that works in integrity and gives secured product delivery within the actual time frame. I hope it could be of help that saves your time and money too.

And who would want an engagement ring that she hadn’t actually seen, let alone tried on, first?.  An engagement ring is something a woman’s going to live with and cherish for, hopefully, a long, long time.  It has to feel right as well as enhance the shape and size of the third finger of her left hand.

B’ain’t necessarily so.

For proof, check with any lingerie store about the number of women who return their husband’s Christmas gift as soon as the shop re-pens after the holiday.

Agreed, so what does a girl do if the engagement ring’s the wrong size?

Hope you have a good day, Dorothy.

Hi Sevens

I don't know where you have your information that "Antwerp is full of scam artists".

We lived there very happily for 15 years and my OH worked in the diamond industry. Sure, like everywhere else, there are a few people who are not comme il faut but Antwerp has a reputation to uphold and the majority of dealers and traders there are dependable. Our son, when he became engaged, obtained the most fantastic diamond through a contact of ours so if you wish to do the same, please PM me as obviously we cannot give his name on an open forum.

Thanks JR M for the correction.

When I replied to Neo, I should have said that the thread, not the last post, was dated.

Let’s hope though that Sevens found a great ring and that the lucky recipient and he are still together.

Re: Engagement ring purchasing in Switzerland/Europe
Post 25

I had one made in Turkey, at one of the hans of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. This particular han has been the goldsmith's caravanserai for hundreds of years. The entire operation takes place along the 2-floor artisans' headquarters. It was a fraction of what it would have been in the US, was truly handmade, the artisan stayed in touch throughout the process, and I got a certificate for the jewels.

The whole process was very serious. It's not the haggling and ripoff part of the bazaar. These are craftsmen, not merchants. I explained what I wanted, they calculated the market price for the jewels, gave me a quote, and encouraged me to ask others so that I made sure I found the perfect match for me.

I'd be happy to give you the whatsapp number of the guy I worked with. His name is Lütfik. He speaks zero English, and I speak zero Turkish, but we used Google translate and the design pictures. If you don't want someone to make a special design then it would be even easier, since he could just send you the catalogue.

One consideration, I had to go pick it up. They won't deliver (plus you wouldn't want to, anyways). But then again, going to Istanbul to pick up a ring is not the worst trip idea in the world :-)

Yeah I know this thread started ages ago but the information is still relevant to anyone ending up here looking for rings. So worth keeping it alive. Just an update, I've used now Baunat.com a few more times and still finding it the best option in Geneva anyways to buy diamond jewelery. Since getting my engagement ring there I've also got both our wedding rings and also two friends have went their for their rings. Every time great experince and quality. Best option for sure without having to make a trip and you have a local presense to follow up if ever any issues.

I’m very satisfied both by the ring and the total price paid for it.
