English-language magazine for expats?

I'm told there used to be a magazine called Gem that was aimed at expats in Geneva. Doesn't seem to exist any more. Does anyone know of  anything similar - a weekly or monthly English-language magazine? (and any idea why Gem didn't make it?) Thanks.

Thanks, Rodica. I took a look and this seems a bit more, erm, serious than I was hoping for - it says it's geared toward leaders and seems kind of business-oriented. I was looking for something more about arts and culture, things for families, etc. But this is a good start. Laughing

Over the years, there have been several attempts to publish English-language material for expats:  a magazine, a weekly review, even a daily newspaper.  Sadly, all have closed after a few months because, in each case, revenue didn’t cover the costs.

There’s a monthly magazine called “Swiss News”, published in Zürich, which I find expensive for what it is.  You’ll find it at the news stands.

As for “Swiss Style”, it’s very geared to the activities of the firms advertising on its pages.

Wish I could be more positive.

I wonder why it doesn't work here. I worked for an English-language monthly in the Netherlands that did extremely well and also enjoyed The Bulletin in Brussels, a weekly magazine that has a broad audience and is very successful as well.
Swiss Style is basically too upscale and narrow. Can I assume that Swiss News is very Zurich-oriented?

It could be the high concentration of anglophone and other expat. groups in the ‘Léman’ area.  There are far fewer in the north and northeast of the country, which perhaps explains why “Swiss News” is more concerned with events in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.  It carries very little news about what’s happening in ‘Romandie’.

Thanks, Ritchie. Do you have any suggestions, as I gather you've been here quite some time, about where to advertise a band's shows? I've done it on glocals and have asked WRS (though I'm not sure they actually make announcements like that) and would sure like to find some publication that hits the general public rather than just the very moneyed public.

Why don't you write a press release and submit it to the entertainment sections of various newspapers and local language publications. Is your band only playing to English-speaking audiences?

Swiss News is the only surviving English-language magazine I know of, they would be happy for a submission I am sure, in fact, talk to them about profiling your band. They are under-staffed, so they may ask if you can provide something, but it's free publicity either way. My wife and I contribute articles on photography to them since about two years now.

Also think about sites like RonOrp, and the many many expat sites around Switzerland, I assume that many are targeted to Geneva expats too. Also try xpatxchange.ch and talk to Ed and Melanie at ExpatExpo, maybe your band could do an appearance at the next Geneva Expo?

Actually, it has more to do with the fact that they are based in Zürich and they have very few contributors from Romandie. They rely on contributors, they do not have a full staff of writers, most articles are written by contributors and refined by the staff editor.

Way back in the last century (!)  I was both a subscriber and a fairly regular 'contributor' to 'S.N.' but they didn't want to give me a write-up unless I placed an ad. in their 'Classifieds' which, at the rates they were charging, was beyond my modest budget for promotional purposes, so I concentrated on more amenable outlets indcluding, inter alia,, World Radio Geneva (as it then was).

HI,

Becoming a member the Geneva Community is also an option. It is a good value for money, especially if you are planning to advertise on a regular basis. The price is CHF 150 per year and you can post unlimited events & services to the website. The events are also put into a weekly bulletin which is currently distributed to approx. 2000 readers. The website is www.thegenevacommunity.ch.
