Exchange your time for YOGA

Hello everyone,

I teach authentic classical Hata Yoga, which I learnt on a 21 week teacher training course in an ashram in India: http://www.ishayoga.org/hata/teachertraining/

I do not charge for my teaching time, although as I have to pay to hire venues and to buy essential equipment, there are charges for some of my classes.

There is quite an elaborate setup involved in creating a space where yoga can be transmitted as a live practice. This involves flowers, incense, a lamp, a photo, and so on. It takes me a long time if I do it alone, and the setup time is all charged by the venues.

So to help me to focus on the teaching itself, to reduce the costs of hiring halls, and to make yoga accessible to as many as possible, I am offering to exchange one hour of my time for one hour of your time.

An example of how this works is that if you are ready give around 5 hours to help me set up for the next course, which is over 4 days (2.5 hours per day), you can attend the course for half price. If you want to attend a course entirely for free, you can build up "volunteer hours".

The next course is going to be Surya Kriya, over 4 days, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd February, from 9am to 11.30am. I anticipate needing help from 7-8am on the Saturdays and from 11.30-12.30 on the Sundays.

Surya Kriya is a flow of asanas, designed as a holistic process for health, wellness and complete inner wellbeing.

Surya Kriya includes several aspects that enrich one’s life:

* Develops mental clarity and focus

* Remedies weak constitutions

* Boosts vigour and vitality

* Balances hormonal levels in the body

* Prepares one for deeper states of meditation

* Enhances the elements and benefits of Surya Namaskar

If you like the sound of this exchange idea, please send me a private message.

All the best,

Michelle

Hi Priyankara,

Yes, it was nice talking to you, and if your daughter is interested, and willing to help, she can help and participate on the same terms :)

14 is the minimum age for learning Surya Kriya.

Below is some more information about the practice we will be learning. Please note, Surya Kriya must be practiced on an EMPTY STOMACH. That means you must have finished your last full meal at least 4 hours before. If you have a light snack, eg fruit or crackers, that should be finished at least 2.5 hours before. Any drink like tea, coffee, milk, juice, there should be a 1.5 hour gap. You can have warm water, and add a little honey or fresh lemon if you wish. The session will be 2.5 hours without a gap, so please ensure you will be able to last without a toilet break ;)

Everyone needs to complete a registration form before the class. I can either email it to you, or you can complete it on the day.

Surya Kriya Dates and Times

4 sessions, each of 2.5 hours is sufficient for most people to learn the practice. Saturday February 15th and Sunday February 16th; Saturday February 22nd and Sunday February 23rd.  9 - 11.30

Set-up volunteers will need to be available from 7am. Depending where you are coming from, we can either meet at the tram stop or just inside the building.

If you would like a follow-up session, it can also be arranged :)

Event Location

Yoga 7, Top floor 20, Cours de Rive, Genève, Geneva GE, 1207

Standard Cost  for working adults: 200 CHF for the whole course.

People who help with around 5 hours of setup etc can attend for 100CHF

Surya Kriya
Surya Kriya is a potent yogic practice of tremendous antiquity – a holistic process to health, wellness and complete inner wellbeing.“Surya” means “sun” and “kriya” means “inner energy process.” Surya Kriya activates the system and balances a person’s energies, leading to stability of the body and stillness of the mind. This strong foundation becomes the basis to explore higher dimensions of life.

Traditionally available only to select groups of yogis, Surya Kriya is being offered by Isha Hata School of Yoga as a comprehensive spiritual practice that is ideal for the hectic pace of today’s world.

Benefits of Surya Kriya include:

* Develops mental clarity and focus

* Remedies weak constitutions

* Boosts vigour and vitality

* Balances hormonal levels in the body

* Prepares one for deeper states of meditation

* Enhances the elements and benefits of Surya Namaskar

How long does it take to do?

There are a few preparatory practices which need to be done before Surya Kriya. Initially, one cycle of Surya Kriya could take around 8 minutes or less. As you improve in your practice, this time will lengthen. You can do Surya Kriya in 3, 6 or 9 cycles.

What’s the difference between Surya Kriya and Surya Namaskar?

If you’ve already been practicing Surya Namaskar, this is a chance to really deepen your practice. Surya Kriya is far more potent. It is the original, which was reduced to Surya Namaskar to teach a larger public. The most powerful elements were removed, so it could be taught with less involvement and commitment.

“When we say kriya, we are referring to a certain action. A namaskar is an act of salutation. If you do any act either with your body, mind, emotion or energy, we call it karma. We could have called Surya Namaskar as Surya Karma, but we are calling it namaskar to suggest the specific act we are doing, which is a salutation. Kriya means that you are not employing your body, mind, emotion or energy. It is an inward action. It is a process of liberation.” - Sadhguru

Notes:

Minimum age: 14 years

Not for: Pregnant women or those recovering from major surgery (wait 6 months after open surgery, 6 weeks after keyhole surgery. Please obtain your doctor’s approval before starting the programme)

Attendance at all 4 sessions is mandatory. Participants must register before the day of the course, and pay the complete amount before the course begins.

Hi Kimberley,

Lovely to hear from you :)  I hope you're settling well into Geneva, and enjoying your time here.

I wasn't sure from your message whether you would like to volunteer AND participate, or just volunteer. Both are possible. [You could just volunteer for this course, and join a shorter course for free, or do more volunteering to join a longer course for free, or volunteer now and pay less for this course.] If you volunteer and participate, you still need to pay half the course costs, ie. 100 francs for the whole course of 4 days. It would probablybe nicest for you to participate as well.

If you've done some yoga before, you will probably have heard of Surya Namaskar. Surya Kriya is the original, from which Surya Namaskar was derived. Surya Kriya is much more powerful, because it involves a certain pattern of breathing and some differences in the form as well. However, I'm sure you would take to it without diffifulties if you have a background in yoga already :)

I will need help setting up on the two Saturdays of the Surya Kriya course around 7am, and on the two Sundays when it finishes, at 11.30am.  Depending where you are coming from, we can either meet at Terrassiere tram stop, or you can make your way to the venue, and we can meet just inside the front door. It's going to be at

Yoga 7, Top floor 20, Cours de Rive, Genève, Geneva GE, 1207

The setting up could take between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast people work, and how well we understand each other. The reason I'm suggesting meeting at 7, although the class doesn't start till 9 is because everything should be ready in enough time so that participants can enter from 8.30am onwards, and feel that the space is already set up and settled.

I don't know where and how you've leaarnt yoga before, but this setup, about which my guru is quite particular, makes a tangible difference to how the space feels when you enter it, and therefore makes it much easier for people to imbibe the teachings, rather than analsyse and understand them with the logical part of their brain. Well, you will see when you come!

So, if an early start if OK with you, then you will be very welcome. That makes 2 or 3 "volunteers", which will be perfect. We should be finished by 8, and then you can do some quiet meditation, or stretching, or whatever you want till 8.45, when you would sit and get yourself ready for the class. Or, if one volunteer is willing to "meet and greet" and make sure people have registered etc, that would also be lovely. It's best if I can do a certain meditative practice before teaching. It prepares me to give the best class.

Please read everything I wrote to the earlier enquiry, especially about empty stomach condition etc.

If it's all still OK with you, I can either email you the registration form for you to complete or you can fill it in on the day. The important parts are to know people's prior experience of yoga, any existing health conditions, and your agreement that you will not try to teach this without going through the proper training.

If there's anything else you want to ask, please do! And if you change your mind, please do let me know, so that I can plan accordingly. Quite a few people say "yes" and then pull out last minute, which is not easy, but that's why I have the built in buffer zone from 8-8.30!

Have a lovely evening,

Michelle

Thank you so much for your quick response.  I would like to volunteer for this course and then participate in a shorter course.  As a student, it is hard making ends meet here because I can't even work Cry, but I am available this weekend.  I live right outside Geneva in Collonges sous Salve and it's really pretty here. At what time should I meet you?

Thanks to the people who have contacted me. I think I have enough helpers now for the weekend, but if you'd like to join the course and have a limited budget, you could also offer your help for setting up at the Mahashivarathri event on 27th February. Setting up will start at about 4pm, and clearing up will be about 7am on 28th Feb.

I'm trying to be as inclusive as possible, because this practice is so great, and I would like to share it with as many people as possible Laughing
