Family apartments at Cite Universitaire

Hello All!

I'm moving to Geneva and one of the housing options I have is the Cite Universitaire de Geneve (46, av. de Miremont). More specifically, I'm interested in the family apartments since my wife and daughter will join me.

Has anyone lived there for either a short or a long time who can share his/her experience about the place? For example, is it quiet (I'm mostly concerned about the student parties)? How much does a 1-bedroom apartment cost? What is included in the rent (electric, gas, internet, etc)? Are the apartments in a good condition? Anything else that you can think of?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, there are 1 bedroom apartments. The truth is that it's not mentioned clearly, but if you download the application form, you can see that you have 3 options; rent a room, rent a studio and rent a family apartment. Also, that's what they told me from the HR department of the university.

The apartments are few and greatly in demand, so you will indeed be fortunate to obtain one.

Moreover, if you are moving to Geneva for any length of time, it probably wouldn’t be the best choice for a family.

Hello Ritchie,

I know that such places are usually ideal for students, but not for families. I was just hoping, however, that the family apartment would be somehow secluded and we wouldn't "suffer" from student parties!

The main reason I'm seriously considering this, is that the salary I'm paid (69K per annum) won't be enough to rent a 1-bedroom apartment...

Have you heard anything in particular about Cite Universitaire? Any information is valuable for me, since I know very few things of how things work in Geneva.

Thanks!

What you have been told refers to the options which are on offer in theory.  This doesn’t mean that the accommodation you choose will actually be available but if you don’t apply you won’t know.

That said, it is not unusual here to pay 25% of one’s income on rent and some people do in fact pay even more.

Finding a 1-bedroom apartment for less than CHF 1500 p.m. won’t be easy and you may have to settle for a large studio instead -- and be aware too that the cost of living is high.

All the best,

Ritchie
