Five things I have learned about Geneva

Time to head back to the U of K after a great three months working i Geneva. I've met some brilliant people and generally had a blast. And I have learned the following :

-  Swiss trams are brilliant

-  There is a reason why people don't go right up to the Jet d'Eau 8=)

-  The Swiss are just as rubbish as the Brits when faced with unexpected snow

-  The phrase "awkward turtle"

-  Never leave your laptop and passport unattended in a pub 8=(

Its been great, maybe I'll be back again one day who knows ?

"  The Swiss are just as rubbish as the Brits when faced with unexpected snow"

Maybe  Geneva (Canton) cannot handle unexpected snow-but I doubt if that necessarily means Switzerland or the Swiss cannot handle unexpected snow.

In the past 20-odd years, Geneva has had some fairly mild winters so, for economic reasons, equipment for heavy snowfalls wasn’t purchased in huge quantities:  it’s expensive to buy and expensive – and bulky –to store.

At the time of  the week-long snowfall in the 1980s, it was suggested that the TPG should borrow bus snow tyres from the Lausanne transport company.  However, apart from getting them to Geneva, there was the question of mounting the tyres.  Extra skilled staff would have been needed – and where were they to be found for a short assignment?

I don’t hold a brief for the TPG (or any other public enterprise) but I do recognize that it’s a juggling act to keep the users happy by providing comfortable vehicles at affordable fares while balancing the network’s maintenance costs and the need to employ experienced staff who, in addition to driving skills, have to cope with an international public speaking a variety of versions of English, French or whatever.

I’m just as inconvenienced by the snow as anyone else, but I do appreciate that the authorities can’t always furnish immediate solutions for every contingency that Mother Nature chooses to send our way.

Do you have any tips in terms of finding accomodation in Geneva? I have come across so many scams it is just frustrating. I am from Vancouver and even there we sometimes fail when up against snow :)
