Yes, food, along with everything else, is expensive. It's just something you need to adjust to. Migros and Coop and the best places to do the shopping I think. Some people go to France but I really don't find it makes that much of a difference in spending once you take into account currency exchange and time/money to get there.
The best way for me to keep the food spending down is to plan, plan, plan. I know it's a bit boring and time consuming but after wasting so much money on food for months on end it had to be done. I now have the weekly budget down to 150chf for two people, which I find not too bad.

Weekly specials are often 20-30% off. Every little bit helps.
In most cases there is a Migros and Co-op in every area of town. You might also have a Denner. All three have weekly specials. Some of the specials at Manor can be interesting as well.

If you want to buy very cheap basic ingredients in Geneva, go to Denner. Everything is cheaper there, but I am not sure about the quality.
Aligro is a big supermarket selling especially in big quantities (restaurants I guess are its main clients), it's great for fresh meat (if you are prepared to buy big quantities) and very fresh fish (you can buy already packed or ask the shop assistant to give you whatever you want, in smaller quantities). Other products' prices (wines also) are mostly similar to other Swiss shops (myabe apart from stron alcohols).
It's worth asking for the fidelity card, it entitles you to special prices every day, even 40 percent off.
I think going to France from time to time is really worth it. Even if you don't have a car, you can take the bus D and go to St JUlien (30 minutes from Cornavin train station).
There you have two small supermarkets Champion (one I think two stops from the border and the other one in the centre), bakeries, butcher's...
You buy cheaper meat and coldmeat (much much cheaper) even at the butcher's, not to mention the supermarkets. And, as someone has already mentioned, the variety really does make the difference (yoghurts, cheese, cold meats, sweets...).
And, good news, Champion supermarkets are open on Sunday mornings!
I just find fruits and vegetables not really fresh there. It's better to buy them on markets.
Of course the other French option is a big supermarket, offering you a huge variety and cheaper than Champion, but you have to go there by car; in my opinion the best one is Carrefour in Segny. Especially their wines section in better than in other supermarkets.
if you decide to start buying food and alcohol in France, I suppose you won't go there every second day, so pay attention to the quantities (e.g. you can't buy more than 500g of red meat per person, you can buy more of chicken and cold meats though). I have never been checked on the bus, but cars are sometimes checked on the border. Go to the Swiss customs website, they have a table with food limits you don't have to declare.
Good luck!

m joining a little late in this forum, but here r some tips:
-if u cook at home u save a great deal..
-i buy veges on sat from a farmers market next to manor, the veges are good and much much cheaper than in any coop/migro/manor. imp: go early to the market, bcos then u get the best to pick from.
-my veges always went bad, irrespective of frm whr i bought them, i found out that it was a problem with my fridge.. now i simply cover the basse of my vegetable tray with kitchen paper.. somehow it helps.
-alligros is a really good place to buy stuff in wholesale, for eg: a 2.5kg pack of lindt choclates cost arount 49 chf, whereas only 1 kg of lindt packs cost around 25 francs in coop or manor. (ps: this was for my yearly trip bak home :P)
- and obviously, keep a lookout for deals in supermarkets.
hope this helped!! :)

After reading your post I went to Casino in Divonne. What a great little place. I am pleased to have returned home with root beer, salt and vinegar potato chips, Pepperidge Farm chocolate chip cookies and best of all they carry Canadian Club and Crown Royal!
I'm think there might have been some fruits and vegetables there too. ;)
