French carte de séjour for UN employee

Hi everyone,

I'm an UN employee and I'm thinking of moving to the french side. However, I'm not European. In Switzerland I have the carte de légitimation, but in France I'd need a carte de séjour. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in applying for a carte de séjour with the French authorities and could tell me a bit more about the process. I need to know whether or not this is possible before I decide to move.

Thank you all for the help!

Hi, i think that you could easily ask to the French Mission in Pregny Chambesy. They certainly could help you and reply to all your questions.

Cheers

You should ask the UN.  There is surely a carte de légitimation for people living/working in France too.  You do not need to ask for a permit to French authorities.

I agree with TheOrangeMan.

This is a matter that should be handled by the HR staff of your particular unit/services in UN.  Don’t go trying to make the arrangements yourself.

Good luck, R.

From what I got from my colleagues in the same situation, the process takes about 2 months.

Here are the steps:

1/ It all starts at the French Consulate in Geneva where you need to get the paperwork and obtain the latest information. The French Consulate is NOT the mission in Pregny but in the Bastions area (near the Parc des Bastions in the old city);

2/ Once you have compiled all the documents (that may require a trip tothe town hall of the town in which you have chosen to live), you are supposed to bring/send your file to the Prefecture in Bourg-en-Bresse (100kms from Geneva);

3/ They will contact you after review and you'll have to do a last trip to Gex (sous-Prefecture) to obtain your document (card) and have your national passport stamped.

I would advise to pay a visit to the Consulate first for them to direct you more effectively.

Good luck.

Thank you all, particularly you Henry. I know I'm supposed to do some work, but I wasn't sure where to start. Now I can move forward. Thanks!
