French language course - Cours d'été - Université de Genève

Hello fellow Glocals,

This is my first post ever, but I had to share my experience with the language course at Geneva University, as I'm hoping it might help some of you decide NOT TO attend the summer language course there.

After attending several intensive courses at Migros (and many different language courses throughout my life) I guess I expected to get the same quality at the Uni. Especially as the price is the same for Migros and Uni course (if not even higher for Uni).

However, quality is something that the University course lacks. First of all, our group counts 15 people. Even though our teacher is dedicated, we only get to spend around 2,5 hours in class per day (as opposed to 3,5 hours at Migros for the same price). And this is where all what's good about the course ends.

There are optional afternoon classes, which take place in amphitheaters with bad acoustics and a huge number of people (45+). This of course makes it impossible to interact with the teacher. There is often not enough materials, so you have to rush from one Uni building to another in order to make it in time to get the materials for the class, otherwise your time and money are completely wasted. There is a computer lab where you're supposed to practice your pronunciation (by recording your voice when pronouncing, without anybody there to correct you), and during first week (out of three) the computers were out of order. On Wednesdays, the class with the teacher is even shorter (<2h), and that's when a Conference on different topics is organized in an amphitheater. So unless you make it there on time to get the first row seat, you will be unable to hear the speaker at all. Time and money wasted again.

So this is my experience. Hope it will be useful to some of you.

Best,

Anna

Re: French language course - Cours d'été - Université de Genève
Post 1

We have 9 people in class and spend real 3h 15min (9:00-12:45 with 30 min break) in class - writing, reading, speaking, practicing grammar, watching movies and listening music. What's wrong with your teacher?

Afternoon "Ecrit" and "Grammar" class is really sad in terms of interaction, but still bring some value. "Oral" and "Pronunciation" are really place to get new knowledge and good practice.

All this happens in Bastions.
