Gay/Gay-friendly lunchtime or after work runners around the UN

Hi there

I am missing having a regular running buddies, specially as the sun is starting to make its appearance.  Are there any gay/gay-friendly jogging/running people who are keen on lunchtime or afterwork runs (just average paced, not fast) around the UN area or other fitness type activities.

Feel free to PM or reply to this post.

Thanks

Matt

Hey there! Does it have to be lunchtime or after work (i work a long way from the UN) I am a previous runner, very unfit, but would be keen to start some gay/gay freindly walking/jogging/running at the weekends?

I think that organizing a gay/gay-friendly jogging/running group is one of the saddest things a gay guy may organize. Ok gay/gay friendly evening when the club is a bit extreme, but what is the added value being among gays while running?

An astonished Piero

Thanks for the reply Pedro.  Yours is one of the saddest replies I have had to this posting, particularly your assumption that gay people should only be visible in night clubs.

I do not wish to debate this matter but I believe your email requires a reply.

There are a number of international sporting events that have a gay focus, e.g. the International Gay Games, the International Gay Rugby Association and from my part of the world the Asia Pacific Out Games.  I suggest that you google them to find out what gay and lesbian people invest their time and energy into them.  You may also have seen the recent coverage of a rugby league player in the UK who recently came out as being gay.

Surely you're argument can be applied to any other communities or groups who are often considered minorities or disadvantaged.  For instance, is it sad to have a running group for people with disabilities?  Is it sad to have womens-specific running group or running events for women?  By the way both of these types of events are advertised through glocals as well.

I am sorry if I assumed that Glocals is a place where people regardless of their gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability can actively and visibly participate in social networking and activities.  Acutally, come to think of it, I think some of the words in the sentence above are included in international and country human rights frameworks.

I agree with you that gays shouldn't have exclusive groups, but the reality is that there are still a lot of intolerant people around, and if Matt feels more comfortable in a gay group, than why shouldn't he be allowed to invite gay people to run with him? Does it have a negative impact on your life in any way? I don't think so.

And why you think gays should only be allowed in clubs that are "extreme" is completely beyond me.

An even more astonished Ralf

Actually my point of view has been completely misunderstod!!! Since I don't think that being gay is minoritay nor a desease not a gender problem I don't see the need for a separate group of runners. I mentioned the club because if you are not gay or gay friendly sometimes you can really feel uncomfortable. I don't think it can happen while running unless you bring with you a 50" screen with gay porn!

if you talk about gay games, I think they are like the gay parades! a good opportunity to talk about gays or for gays to pick up, but nothing more.

very different is a special olympics, where people with handicaps have the unique opportunity to do agonism. but you are normal! you can compete with non-gays without any problems!

I can open a thread to create a running group for red hair guys, for guys less than 1.70m heigh and so on, again, I don't see the added value.

am I a bit clearer now? I had to fight often with my gay friends against this attitude either to stay completely silent behaving like an heterosexual or to belong to a sort of gay-ghetto, losing the pleasure to be yourself are among everyone.

Piero

about the clubs, I mean when it is written gay night. Very often it is an extreme party, where everything can happen, on the dancefloor and in the bathrooms (!!!).

but we are out of theme now.

I agree with some of what you are saying, and I disagree with other things. The one thing we should agree on is that not all gays have sex in the bathrooms, not all straight people are intolerant gay bashers, and that things are never black and white.

Cheers

Ralf

This is ridiculous, are we still in the 80ties? I thought Geneva was a gay city, so I've been told. Whatever homophobic behaviour is not acceptable.

It seems people are keen for a social get together so I propose a gay/lesbian/friendly coffee night around 19.00 on Thursday night somewhere where there are no gay nightclubs, screens for gay or lesbian porn, gay parades or gay sex in toilets.

Starbucks (or other place depending on numbers) seems to meet the criteria Laughing  I will send an activity post out later tonight.

Piero, apologies for getting your name wrong earlier.  I understand your point but I personally disagree with your comments.

Like others on here, I don't know many gay people in Geneva. For me personally, it gets pretty tiring avoiding questions at work and socially about whether I brought my wife to Geneva, whether I have children and if I tell people that I am gay that they make assumptions about what I do on my weekends.

The thing I like about glocals is that I know that there is a whole range of different things I can get involved in if I wanted to.

Over and out and thanks to everyone for their supportive comments

Hi all - I'm not going to respond to the in-between threads. Only that I'm happy to join for jogging (or nightclubs for that matter) with others who share my interests.

Is anything happening on this?  I'd love to go afterwork for 30-45 minutes with others now that it's dark.

I haven't found any good bars here... and definitely not for women.  I've only arrived in Geneva this week though. Any advice for a fellow yank?

Hey folks,

This is the group that cropped up as a result of this thread, founded by the legendary Mr. Soeberg. All are welcome!

Sorry for not being 100% coherent with this post, but is there any Gay Volleyball team in Geneva? I used to play in a gay team while in Italy and it was incredibly competitive :) Thank you for your help :) Giampaolo.
