General Practitioner verses Specialist?
Can anyone tell me at what point I’m supposed to make an appointment with a general practitioner as opposed to a specialist? I’m a little concerned with spot on my arm that seems to be changing pigmentation and size. Do I contact a dermatologist first or do I talk to a general practitioner?

It may sound like an obvious question but where I come from one is suppose to get a referral from the GP, a.k.a. ‘the gate keeper’ first. I’m also a little confused why anyone would bother to go to a general practitioner in the first place when they could go directly to a specialist.

Thanks for any advice

Make an appointment directly with a dermatologist. I thought the same as you and made an appointment with my GP who said "Why have you come to see me?" and I ended up paying twice for a consultation!

It depends on the type of insurance you have. My current insurance requires I get a referral from my "house Doctor" in order to see a specialist. If you have the same type and go directly to a specialist, your insurance may decline to cover the costs.

Call your insurance company to verify, they should also be able to give you the names of specialists they deal with. Good luck!

Lannah is 100% correct here - it all depends on your insurance type.

Some insurance companies allow you to pay less monthly insurance, in return for your commitment to first see your GP before going to any specialist.

If you have the above plan, and you go directly to a specialist, the insurance will not cover you.

In any case, hope that spot is nothing!
